I know the Japanese title is Shinseki (sp?) Evangelion, and the US one is Neon Genesis Evangelion. I thought for the longest time it was Neo Genesis Evangelion. I thought I heard someone say that the Shinseki meant "new". Does anyone know what Shinseki means and why they used "Neon" (I just sounds to me like they through some random English word in) and not "Neo" (because New Genesis sounds more relevant). Thanks.

There has already been a thread about this, but I guess your like most ppl and don't look for previous threads b4 you make a new one. Neon = new = neo and vice versa!
Besides Neon sounds a lot cooler!

Sorry, I didn't look back too far. I didn't know neon necessarily meant new. I thought it is an element on the periodic table and is used in tacky signs. The whole "it sounds cooler" thing is the reason I thought they used it.

(From my copy of Chamber's Dictionary)

Symbol: Ne
Name and atomic no: Neon (10)
Derived from: Greek, neos = new

Put it all together and you have:

A new beginning relating to the gospel and its teachings.

I looked up evangelical for the last part.

New World? I'm not sure, I thought it was new era or century or millenium.

I knew that Neo= New and Genesis= Beginning.

What I didn't get is why they used "Neon" as opposed to "Neo", but apparently "Neon" implies "new" as well. I just feared that they used "neon" because it sounds cool, and that would have conflicted with the symbolic nature and the integrity of the show.

I bet this neon comes from latin, and neo is just an abbreviation like neo-hippy, because neon hippy wouldn't sound well.

well i always thought it was new beginning (neo - being new and genesis meaning beginning) i so thought it was kind of like, a new beginning with the evangelions....
any ideas on the evangelion bit?
i thought they are referring to the evas but im not sure...

The three characters above 'Evangelion' in the logo (I think it's Japnanese and also Cantonese) definitely read 'New World', so I presume that's what Neon Genesis is supposed to mean. Actually, Wakizashi, I don't think Neon means new literally, it probably just sounds cool, like you said. Maybe you can blame it on the translators.

I always thought the title sounded like a chapter title from the bible- so that we have the book of Neon Genesis, with a chapter called Evangelion.

well, evangelion, in spanish, evangelion means gospel. For examples, we have a part of the bible called "Los Evangelios", there's the catholict sect called "Evangelistas" who preach the Evangelio, I'll have to check with my sista who studied theology, but I think the books from the profets are called the Evangelios.
