I was asked by a member of this board to *briefly* describe what Eva is. It is a tough call for me to describe anything about Eva briefly but I did my best. After sending it to him(her?) I though it might be a good idea to post here as well. So enjoy.

Neon Genesis Evangelion began airing on the TV Tokyo Network in Japan on October 3, 1995 and ended on March 27, 1996. The ending of the anime series was very controversial and so in 1997 Gainax released two theatrical movies that would redo the ending of Neon Genesis Evangelion. The first movie released was Evangelion: Death and Rebirth, which made its theatrical debut on March 16, 1997. The second theatrical movie had its debut on June 19, 1997 and was entitled The End Of Evangelion.

It was created by GAINAX studios who are responsible for such classics as Nadia - Secret of the Blue Water, and the theatrical movie Wings Of Honneamise.

The credits are as follows:
Shin Seiki Evangelion - (Neon Genesis Evangelion)
(C)GAINAX, Project Eva., TV Tokyo, NAS
Created by GAINAX
Series Director : Anno Hideaki
Character Designs : Yoshiyuki Sadamotoi
Mechanical Designs : Yamashita Ikuto, Anno Hideaki
Music : Shiro Sagisu
Main Screenwriters : Hideaki Anno, Satsugawa Akio, Enokido Yooji
Main Storyboards : Masayuk, Higuchi Shinji, Tsurumaki Kazuya
Main Animation Directors: Suzuki Shunji, Honda Takeshi, Hasegawa Shinya
Art Director : Katoo Hiroshi

Anno Hideaki is the main man behind the story, and he tried to include everything of himself in his work. He has described himself, in his Introduction to Evangelion, as "a broken man who could do nothing for four years... one who was simply not dead." He said that Eva was "...a production where my only thought was to burn my feelings into film."

For Anno, whom at one point was sleeping at the GAINAX offices so he wouldn't kill himself, Eva was everything, and he describes it as such.

"Evangelion is my life and I have put everything I know into this work. This is my entire life. My life itself."
-Hideaki Anno (translation from 11/96 Newtype in Protoculture Addicts #43)

The story focuses around Shinji Ikari, the "Third Children" and pilot of Evangelion Unit One. Throughout the story Shinji is basically the creator Anno's avatar through which to express his feelings. Other main characters include Rei Ayanami and Asuka Langley Sohryu who are also Eva pilots, and Misato Katsuragi who is the operation chief in charge of the pilots.

Everything is steeped with symbolism and references in Eva, there are a lot of religious themes and motifs, but these are all just window dressing for the true story about a child (who represents a man) who didn't know how to open himself up and let people in. As mentioned the ending in particular was very unconventional, and was very controversial when it was released in Japan, because of this (and a lot of other reasons) two movies were released to attempt to retell the ending of the series.

Very information packed MDWigs

How long did that take you to find all that info and all

Well it did it mostly from memory except for the credits and the Anno quote so it took about 10 minutes all up. I hope the dates are right though ^^ It's been a while since I actually checked that stuff.

....

Ok well I just went and checked then ^^ Yep they are right.

The screening dates for the movies are still on the Gainax site and the series premiere date is etched in my mind ^^ The 7 year anniversary is only a few months away.

I have a question now. Which was the reason for doing the 2 final episodes as they are, I mean, where they in a hurry to finish it before a deadline? Where they out of budget? Was it intended to be like that? What happened??

There are many reasons the why the final two episodes were like that. Basically though, Gaianx were running into money and time problems, they didn't have enough of either to complete what Anno had originally planned (what he had in his original script for episode 25). So Anno basically took over completely and made the series episodes that we saw. There are some references to the original script (Asuka in Eva-02 in the water, Misato, Ritsuko "dead") but generally it was separate from it.

When it was finished, Anno was satisfied with the ending. It wasn't what he originally wanted, but when he had finished it he was glad he had done so. Hence all the Anno quotes about being happy with the ending and if people didn't understand it "Too Bad".

Now Gainax added stuff to the video release of episode 21 -24 and Anno wanted to completely remake episodes 25 and 26 for this video release. He felt first and foremost that he owed it to the rest of his staff, for basically monopolising the original last two episodes and of course there was the money factor in there as well and a lot of other stuff.

Anyway a few weeks after the end of the screening of the series in Japan it was decided that two "new" last episodes would be made for spring and summer of 1997 and that they would be theatrical releases, movies, not video release.

So Gainax made Evangelion: Death & Rebirth, the first part Evangelion: Death, which was directed by Masayuki was just basically a recap of the series. The second part Evangelion : Rebirth, would be the new episodes 25 and 26, the other ending that was first planned for a video release.

Because of schedule problems again Gainax announced that "Evangelion : Rebirth" would only be the beginning of the new ending.

So along comes The End of Evangelion:

Now the first part of EoE, Episode 25' Air was based off Anno's original script for that episode, it was how Anno originally wanted that episode to be. Episode 26' however delves very much back into the "inner world" (and in some places "real world"). Kazuya Tsurumaki directed Episode 25' now Anno, however Anno took responsibility for episode 26', it was his baby and he wanted to end it.

Don't forget the censorship problems after what Gainax pulled with episodes 18-20. Not only was another factor in why the ending was changed (certainly can't have gory Eva series battles and soldiers killing everyone @_@), but also ended up screwing Cowboy Bebop over a few years later :(

What has censorship done to Bebop? That's new to me!!

Well Cowboy Bebop had a weird release in japan.

(Note i'm not quite sure of the numbers but they are quite close)

14 episodes aired on tv and the other 12 were released only on tape/dvd/ld (laserdisc) hence it was a half tv series half ova release.

Due to Cowboy Bebop's extreme popularity all of it was aired on a cable network. but with only 14 episodes aired on free to air tv for it to get so popular, and stay so popular (going by the latest newtype polls where spike has once again reclaimed the number one male character spot - June 2002 Newtype Magazine) was incredible to say the least.

One problem with the synopsis Wigsy

It was created by GAINAX studios who are responsible for such classics as Nadia - Secret of the Blue Water, Gunbuster - Aim For The Top, and the theatrical movie Wings Of Honneamise.

Ah thats much better.

I'm not saying that Gunbuster isn't a classic, it is of course, I just rewatched it recently and I don't think it has aged very well. Hence my leaving it out ^^

That's a good synopsis MDWigs...you should write those little blurbs on the back of the DVD cases you'd do a hell of a better job than the people who do.

When it was finished, Anno was satisfied with the ending

so was I... am I the only one? it seems so..

btw: Cowboy Bebop is out in Australia the same day as Death and Rebirth...I'm going to be broke.

Get Cowboy Bebop DVDs Volume 1 and 2. It will be the best $60 you will ever spend (apart from the rest of the series), I don't really recommend Death And Rebirth but you must get End Of Eva it's amazing. As amazing as Cowboy Bebop hmmm

It wasn't too bad after I thought about it. I had bought the last 3 DVDs at the time and watched them all back to back. It was very late when I finished and I remember thinking, "WTF? Did I fall asleep and miss the finale?" When I finally rewatched it, I got it (I think :p )

I'll join that club, unlike those music clubs which just rape you up the @$$, if 50 cds for .5$ sounds too good to be true, it probably is!!!

I can sum up Eva in even simpler terms for those out there who dont feel like reading a lot(no offence MD Wigs)

Eva can be summed up as: The greatest series EVER!!!!!!

more specifically, cool mecha, realistic characters and deep psychology, it's like a do it yourself lobotomy kit. Go watch all of it right now...no I mean it we'll wait.

Oh onemore thing, dont forget your umbrella ;)
