View Full Version : No Akira?

I think that there needs to be an Akira forum. I mean, it's the greatest anime EVER. Period. But who am I to judge?
Anyway, what's your thoughts on it? I thought it was absolutely awesome. I loved how Tetsuo always had that badass hair-sticking-up-look.
I love the movie, but the manga is actually a better and more complete story.
One gripe I've always had with the movie was Tetsuo and Kaori's relationship. In the manga, Tetsuo genuinely loves Kaori, and her death is very noble. The shock of her death is what sends him over the edge, and he even tries to bring her spirit back into her body. In the movie, Kaori plays the part of a battered wife, and stands by Tetsuo even as he insults her and eventually kills her. I'm fascinated by manga Tetsuo's complex and sympathetic perosnality, but any chance of me feeling empathy for movie Tetsuo went out the window when showed more concern for a stolen bike than his girlfriend who was being sexually assaulted.

Hell yeah.
One of my gripes about the movie: No care-taker robots! I saw the movie before I read the manga, but come on, they would have kicked so much arse! But then again, Akira wouldn't have been...er, spoilerish, heh...in the movie...unlike in the manga. I still need to get the last volume...
Oh yeah, Joker is cooler in the manga too. Not just some overweight biker dude after all.

We have a forum for requests (http://animeboards.com/f6/s), so please use that in the future if you want to ask for a new forum.
One of the reasons why we don't have an Akira forum is that there is rarely any discussion regarding it. If that were to change...;)

Thanks for the welcome, Drizzten. I come here every now and then. I work for a website and we're designing forums, and Animeboards was one of the examples that we used. Nice place ya' got here.

What would've really been intresting would be if instead of making Akira into a movie, they made it into an OAV series and used much mroe material from the manga. I think it would've been great.

Mmmmm...six, one hour-long OVA episodes! One per graphic novel volume! :D
I haven't read any of the manga. One of my friends is collecting the GN's and he glows whenever the subject is raised in conversation. Of the story that he told me, the movie only covers something like half the manga story.
What do you think was the main theme the movie tried to get across?

Don't ---- off the little guy, because he might be God.
[Edit: now that I actually think about it, I'm pretty sure I ripped that quote off (or at least 90% of it), but I don't have a conscious memory of the source or to what it originally referred :heh: . Some SciFi thing, no doubt. Whatever, it was the first cool phrase that popped into my head :D ]

I agree with the OVA idea, Drizz, but I'd say one-and-a-half or two hour long portions for each volume...

I haven't read the manga, but concerning my apreciation of the movie, well, you're not supposed to feel any empathy for Tetsuo at all, he's an ass hole. I thought the point of the movie was rather like "No matter how powerfull you get, if you're an ass hole you'll still be an ass hole". I mean, that's where the whole ameba thing goes, isn't it?
And it's strange Proyect Akira 82 hasn't been to this topic yet... But, people, go get an AKIRA(yeah, gotta capitalize)forum.

First off Akira rocks in any form but I dont think a forum is necesary b/c there are that many discussions on it.
Second I didn't get the impression that Tetsuo was an -------, not on a deep down level. His role was more of the abused kid given power. The reason I dont think of him as an ------- is b/c of those final scenes where Keneda sees Tetsuo in the light. It allowed you to understand him and even sympathize with him.

Akira though it doesn't get as much discussion as some animes, does get good discussions when they get going. I think that if you're going by the criteria that the movie doesn't get much discussion, you might as well hold the Mononoke and the Blood forums to that standard as well. They rarely get any topics or posts in them yet Eva2K felt wholly justified in giving those films forums. If we're going to use that criterion then I suggest that Akira be given it's own forum as well.
Blood should never had got a forum, it was complete stlye over substance and had no plot IN THE ANIME!. i don't care how much backstory it had and that a videogame was suppose to continue it or some crap it should never had got a forum. How Blood got a forum over the likes of Akira, X (counting the tv series here) amazes me.

We've gone over this before. Since Eva has sole discretion when creating anime forums, it's entirely up to him to decide which animes get a forum. This means that if he fancies a forum for a certain series, he makes one. When requesting a new anime forum, he wants us to use the criteria I implied above.
Further discussion can go in Requests or Contact Admin. Back to Akira.

I agree that the manga is better than the oav, but I still don't think it should have it's own forum....

I hear the now have a script for an actual film for Akira... The frightening thing is it's gonna be an American film not Japanese.
If they screw up imagine the hate mail...

I just saw the movie for a second time, and I must admit I was mistaken. Tetsuo is not just an ass hole. The characters are much more complex than that. The relation between him and Kaneda is very complex since Tetsuo somehow really likes his friend, still he is angry at him. However, I insist you do not necesarilly have to feel empathy with him, that's not the point either.
