can someone explain to me how/why a rei 'ghost' would appear whenever one of the main characters dies? [ritsuko, misato, and probably some others, i haven't seen the movie] it's not like rei was dead and her soul/ghost was coming back to observe them... she was standing right next to gendou when he shot ritsuko.

I think that you need to see End of Evangelion first to fully understand the concept of the Rei 'ghost' appearing and melting with everyone. During the movie, Rei merges with Lillith (as she was originally from Lillith), which will eventually take everyone's souls during Third Impact. When Rei merges with pepole, it is more Lillith who is doing with it.
I believe that the concept of Rei merging with people is so that they are happy when they melt and become LCL. For instance, Maya's 'Rei' becomes Ritsuko, and one of the male's technician's 'Rei' becomes Misato. Similarly, Gendo's 'Rei' turns into Yui, which is more ironical than anything.

As 2ndimpact said...you should watch EoE again and MAYBE you will understand...please do not take me wrong...EoE is VERY hard to understand.

I understood the appearences of Rei after she had merged with Lilith. What I'm asking is when she appeared to people _before_ she merged with Lilith. (Ritsuko, Misato)

the answer is simple, who would you rather have visiting you before you die? Rei Ayanami or...Whoopi Goldberg. Yeah I thought so, you do wanna die happy dont you? Shame rei isn't wearing a bunny suit. Or better yet, dressed up as Sailor Moon, any hot chick who would dress up as Sailor Moon for me is one that Im' marrying ^^
