'Kay, here's the scoop. Mitama are old. Old, old, old. As in 'Japan's prehistory' old. They are real, yes, and they usually are blue or green. They've been dug up at a few archaelogical sites, and I've occasionally seen them on contemporary necklaces, etc... Sorta like wearing an ankh, y'know? The difference is, nobody actually knows what the signifigance of mitama are. Jewelery? Religious meaning? Nobody knows. Blue Seed-which actually addresses Japan's pre-history in the latter half of the series-has a unique theory on mitama: they're actually monster brains! Whee!
