What kind of bird is Vicious' pet? Also, I can't remember, did they ever mention its name in the series? Here's a pic to help you understand what I'm talking about.

it might be some kind of new spieces of bird or some kind of lab experiment gone wrong.

i don't recognize what kind of bird it is.

A friend of mine said that the bird was a rip off of this other anime series called Captain Harlock but I'm not sure if this was intentional. Anyways, I think they mention the bird's name in one of the last 2 episodes so I'll check into it tomight.

Well I checked my tapes last night and watched the episodes with Vicious in them and they don't mention the bird's name anywhere. I think the character designers named it something though it just wasn't mentioned in the series.

On a happier note, the Cowboy Bebop forum is no longer the smallest anime series forum. Now that Fushugi Yuugi forum has less posts than this one. I think this is mostly due to me and Jordan. We really need to find more Bebop fans to post here and stimulate some discussion.

Well I've noticed Otaku and Cruel Angel's Thesis in here more so I think it's starting to catch on. I'll just keep posting more threads about thoughts on the series and eventually we'll get more discussion.

It looks like a cross between a crane and a Raven, arent both these birds symbolically associated with death? Theres a few of us bebop fans around, my DVD session 5s in the mail and 6 is comming out soon so I should be able to see the last 8 eps soonish :)

Hey, I've got it! I knew that ype of bird looked familiar, but I couldn't remember how to spell it, so I looked it up in Meeriam-Webster's Collegiate dictionary, and looky what I found:

Cormorant: noun 1: Any of a family (Phalacrocoracidae) of dark colored, web-footed water birds that have a long neck, hooked bill, and a distensible throat pouch.

Would seem to fit the bill (ouch, bad pun), ne? And for the record I'm pretty sure Captain Harlock has the exact same bird percehd on his shoulder. A homage to the anime of yore, perhaps?

But I'm more interested in knowing if the bird has a name. I know it wasn't mentioned in the series but I was just wondering if it was mentioned in any of the artbooks, manga or film books.

Also, the bird is very similar but not quite... I still haven't heard anything about it being a homage to Captain Harlock...

Well I'll tell you the birds name is never mentioned even up to the last episode. Infact his bird will be used as a weapon like a suicide bomb that kills everyone in the room!!

on topic:: in the Series, the bird looked more like a Grekal {sp?} or Crow rather than it does in that image you have.

I still say it's a cormorant. But it could be a product of genetic engineering or even a robot. Hey, it does explode in episode 25, and I didn't see no blood.

Cormorants don't look like that, I grew up by the sea as a child and there were always cormorants around, that beastie is definately not a great or a double-crested cormorant.
It looks more like a cross between an hawk, a heron, and some kind of crazy-plumed bird. I put my bets on it being a robot or a genetically modified creation.

well i first thought it was a cormoran, but i was wrong i think!
i would say this bird is a new species. i think that vicious was born on mars, like spike, so he would have had a pet from mars i think, and we know that there are more creatures that never originally lived on earth!
the name of the bird was never mentioned in the anime, that is right! what would change if the bird had a name? vicious was the never the type of guy who cared for others! so why give a damn bird a name? i think he knew that the bird would die someday and he just had it for this particular moment!
maybe the bird was manipulated, like ein was?

I'm going to try to get in contact with the creators of the show and ask them to name the bird... They probably have some sort of name that they called it that wasn't mentioned anywhere...

dont you think that the bird is a little untypical for vicious? i mean he is the snake and a scorpion or a snake or spider would fit even better to him, so why this damn stupid bird????

I don't think its a robot cuz he feeds it bird seed, unless that was to sell the image that its a "real" bird...
