Alrighty then...
Today, I was at this Anime convention, and among other things, one of the things they screened in the cinema was a an anime music video for what was apparently Kare Kano. I actually didn't know what it was, but I had heard of Kare Kano before, and it seemed to fit what I knew about the show, and finally it was confirmed by my friend that it was Kare Kano.
Anyway, now to my point. The music video was really, really good. Ok, I know that doesn't sound like a point, but bear with me. Anyhow, it was like four or five minutes long, and it was very funy, and also very touching. And it was almost like it was encompassing the entire story of it. I don't know the story, but it seemed like it was doing that. Anyway, basically what all this crap I'm spewing out here on this post here is leading to one thing. A statement and a question.
Kare Kano looks cool. Is it good?
Good enough to worth getting, whether through fansub, or, if and when DVDs turn up in Australia, on DVD as well?
Ok, I know I didn't have to go through all that other stuff just to ask that, but my mind is still swimming after seeing Cowboy Bebop. Basically I've just been repeating Cowboy Bebop is so good. Cowboy Bebop is so good. Cowboy Bebop is so good. over and over in my head, so i'm having trouble getting my thoughts together.
Which reminds me... I need to go to the Cowboy Bebop forum to rave about it! *runs off to Cowboy Bebop forum*

i just watched the first dvd and i loved it. of course, im a fan of the "romance-comedy" genre (tenchi, love hina, Dual, El hazard etc etc). but even if youre not a fan of the genre, its still VERY good, i recomend it. and hey, its be GAINAX.
(and yes, bebop is good-no, masterpiece!)
I agree with Fatal Outlaw. I too enjoy the "romance-comedy" genre for a good laugh every now and then. From what I've seen off the first DVD so far the show seems to have a lot of depth too it, and the psychological analysis is nice at times for understanding the characters more. The show does have it's hints of Evangelion and such, but at the same time has a style all it's own. I recommend it as well.

Thanks for the replies.
Well, I've been doing a little research on my own about Kare Kano, I read a little introduction back story on it, and it really sounds good. I really want to see it, especially since everyone's saying how good it is. Hopefully they'll bring the DVDs out to Australia eventually, because I have a feeling I'll want to get them.

Yes, its very good even if you don't like the romance-comedy genre (but then I do like it)
I do have one frined who doesn't like it cause of the animation style which is very varied but I think thats one of the best parts.
Id say at least ind an ep fansubbed to see if you like it.
Me, I'm anxiously awaiting mine today *waits to tackle the Fed Ex man*

It has an excellent beginning, a good middle and a rushed ending.
Overall pretty good.

It's really innovative, in my opinion. I think they set the benchmark for the entire romantic comedy genre.
Also, the introduction back story is basically nothing. The REAL plot is the characters. Thats what makes this anime so lovable!

That's what I figured. But it's nice to know roughly the backdrop of the story rather than just, there's this girl, and this guy, and there's a high school or something. :)
Well, although I didn't before, I have grown to quite enjoy the romantic-comedy genre, even outside of anime, which I myself find surprising. I'm trying to get a few fansubbed episodes at the moment, and then I'll see what I think about it. I reckon I'd like it though. :)
I'll post my thoughts after I see an episode or so. :)
I have to agree with jinshil here. I know Kare Kano redefined my standards for the romance theme anime, as well as anime itself. The series effected me profoundly, perhaps more than any other.
It's nice to see the praise for the series of the first DVD ie the first six episodes, because I know what happens after that, as do most of us here.
I don't know about the rest of you but the constant revisiting of 'the story so far' to a rather moderate extent, ruined this series for me. I wish this could have been 13 eps instead of 26, oh well. A damn shame that a show that had some of the best innovations I've seen in anime (certainly puts its follower FLCL in perspective) fell into such a rut, one that ultimately wasn't working.

So did you liked it or not?
I personally enjoyed the 'story so far' segments. They weren't all that obtrusive, and I thought the commentary and set up was kind of cute (in some twisted way :heh: ).
In terms of length, I only wish that more of the manga had been covered. However if possible, it should have been kept at the 26 episodes.
Right now I'm looking around my locale for the first DVD. With 6 episodes on one disk, it seems like such a bargain.

I don't think your gonna be able to find it in stores for a bit unless they have some kind of set up with rightstuf. As the only places I've seen it were Amazon.com, Bestprices and Rightstuf. Nothing at best buy or circuit city. Or the two anime stores in Milawukee.

raymojo I do like KareKano but it falls just short of greatness in such a spectacular way that it sours the series for me.
