I have to watch more...but so far it's Escaflowne...but that monstrous sword that Van's mentor wielded in the beginning should count!

That's his name, Balgus...the livingroom erupted when he died...we were pretty pissed. :(

He had to die since he represented war... ya see... the king of Fanelia was destined for war. Folken kept explaining it over and over. For Balgus to be left alive, it would be cool to see cooler fight scenes, its just that it wouldn't make sense for him to stay alive since he belonged to the past. the past which was the path to war.

That's only assuming that once you reach a point in your life, you can't change. If I remember, Balgus was very nice to Hitomi and thoughtful to Van, even right up to training. I think he could have survived and the story wouldn't have suffered. Think--he could have escaped to the forest, regained his strength, then re-surface and continue the Van's and Allen's training.

Even if he represented war/fighting, isn't that what Van and Allen have to do anyway just to survive against Zaiboch?
