I saw Afura in El-Hazard 2 and the manga, and she seems to have the same function as a piece of nice furniture.
Is she more than just a piece of talking scenery, or is that pretty much all there is to her?

Well in the manga, she is there for support and comical acts... Good old Lesbian... Er... her name escapes me... :heh:
Damn! To lazy to look it up, I better watch the OVA/OAV eps that I own, still havn't seen the last two...

The Wanderers series does a better job of explaining who Afura is. Granted its a separate plot line from the magical world and alternate universe timelines. But, she does have a more significant roll in that series as that series explains how her and Shayla became priestess.

Yeah, Afura is more then furniture. They aren't as obvious in the OVAs due to time constraints probably but you can tell that she is a serious woman devoted to her studies. Afura is a woman of beauty and knowledge. She is also one of the most powerful priestesses or so she says. I especially like that rival episode between her and Shayla Shayla.

They should just make an entire show devoted to Afura and Nanami's passionate, forbidden love . RROWWRRRRRRR!!!

re: dedicated show.
I wouldn't be surprised if you could find this (in the form of Henai Doujinhsi) on eBay...
