Whats this anime about?

i have heard some great things about this anime and i am probably going to buy it but i was just wondering if someone could give me a description of its story and characters

This is one of those animes thats just hard to summarize. It deals with a lot of characters and several intertwining OVERAL themes.
I guess ill just cop out and post the 'official' summary thing for it:

A scream in the night, and in that instant the world changed ... or at least, it appeared to. There have always been forces in the world and voices in the night: some friendly and other malevolent. Invisible until summoned; they slide through dimensions as people walk through doorways. They wait, and watch the doings of Man closely ... each for their own reasons. Sometimes, they appear ... and when they do, the world changes.

Everyone knows about Boogiepop: meet her one dark night and you are taken. People tell each other the stories and laugh: no one believes that she exists in this day and age. Still, there are some strange things that appear to be going on just below the surface. Darkness takes many forms, though. Evil and good intermingle. The glass shatters. Time stands still. There is something in the darkness. You aren't alone. Are you safe?

Five years ago, there was a string of grisly murders that shook the city to its core ... and in the present, psychic echoes reverberate.

Ah, the box set sits happily on my shelf, yet I have yet to find the time to settle down for a nice BP marathon. I've seen a few episodes but was paying only partial attention at the time. While it most definitely caught my interest (I wouldn't have purchased it otherwise), it is the type of anime I have to be in the proper 'mood' for.

Perhaps tomorrow the mood will strike me.

local video store only has the first DVD, yet another series I gotta purchase =(

uhm, is the chick = boogiepop or is it one of them weird demons that show up?

remember how that demon (first DVD) got the chick with the headphones to arrange a meeting with that weird chick who dresses funny when a demon is around (sorry for the ---- descriptions), how come when she showed up, that other demon ------ off, and then the other chick just leaves her too so that the security guard/cop dude kills her. ghey, I needs more of the series. *sigh*. 4 dvds long right?

wow, amazing how much more sense it all makes once you get the 2nd DVD, I feared it would be Lain, which leaves a person quite unknowing for the rest of their life as to wtf it was all about.
