Please, absolutely no spoilers from the manga in this thread.

I was wondering, for anyone thats read it, if the manga went any further than the anime, or explained the story at all better.

And what volumes would the anime series be covering?

As far as I know, it's still all rumors about a second season. Perhaps an outcry of demand from the US market with the domestic release will spur a second series ... hopefully.

The manga explains the ending and introduces many new characters. It basically continues the story to pursue Guts' quest for revenge --- the whole first series, as noted in the first episode, is essentially a flashback.

Yes, I'm quite aware of that. I've read the mangas (not 100% which volumes, wasn't paying attention to that) from the point the Skull Knight takes Gatts and Caska from where ever they went to the part where Gatts finds Dragonslayer and goes off to hunt the rest of the demons.

I'll rephrase in case I was madly ranting again (or you weren't answering me, just occured to me :) ), which volumes out of so and so many does the anime include?

Alesil, I didn't even see your question --- I was trying to answer the original question.

Anyways, the anime covers roughly the Taka no Dan (Band of the Hawk) Arc in the manga, from Volume 1 (skipping between 1 & 2) and Volumes 4-13.

There are many significant scenes and some characters in the manga arc that are not in the anime, for various reasons. For instance,

SPOILERS

the Queen in the manga is having an affair with Julius, the King's brother, while this is not mentioned in the anime, and characters like Puck, Skull Knight (an unconscionable subtraction, IMO), Silatt, and Wild (thankfully gone).
