I've heard that the TV show wasn't as good as the OVA at all. I hope you have opinions on this series!

It has its pros and Cons when compared to the OVA.
Overall most people like the OVA better, yet at the same time most of us still like the TV series.
I myself think its a good series, and I know many people on this board who loved it.
Its the type of series that you have to watch in its entirety before you pass judgement on it, and you have to have some knowledge on the relationship between the OVA and the Lodoss Novels to understand why they made the changes that they did, but if you're ever lost, just ask on the board.
Chronicles is a good series, I highly suggest seeing it, especially if you liked the OVA series.

Lodoss Novels? Are you saying that they made books after the series?

1.) They made a Lodoss style D&D type of RPG.
2.) They made the novels based on that.
3.) They made the OAV based on that.
4.) Realizing the 2nd 1/2 of the OAV is nothing like the novels, they made the T.V. series.
5.) Then they smoked alot of weed and made Legends of Crystianna. (sp?- it's wrong I know it ^^) Rotten fruit was pelted.
6.) A couple of mangas came out.
Personally, I think Chronicles is very good, but only if you understand the differences and the changes like Robotech Master said. Also, IMO, Chronicles is a hell of a lot better if you've watched the OAV first. Otherwise, you're not gonna have a clue. ^_^

Ryo Mizuno came to the US one time, I believe, and saw Dungeons and Dragons, the infamous RPG game that Japan didn't know about at all. At the time, Western Fantasy which had spread like wildfire through the US since the days of Tolkien had not taken such a path in Japan, where the entire idea of Fantasy was different.
Mizuno was inspired by D&D and in Japan, started an RPG titled Sword World. Like D&D, many supplemental RPG Campaigns and Dungeon Master Books were released for this RPG, which was made and released by Group SNK.
Record of Lodoss War was a 3 story-book supplemental to the RPG as a whole. Mizuno created most of the world known as Forceria and the continents of Lodoss, Crystania, and Alecrast that are on it.
From the game, Mizuno himself made some Novels. At first planned as a trilogy of sorts, Lodoss became very popular, which made him advance the novels to 7 total. They are:
1) The Grey Witch
2) The Demon of Flame
3) Demon Dragon of Fire Dragon Mountain Part 1
4) Demon Dragon of Fire Dragon Mountain Part 2
5) Holy War of Kings
6) Holy Knight of Lodoss Part 1
7) Holy Knight of Lodoss Part 2
Among these, he also wrote the 4 legend of Crystania Novels, numerous short story collections (including Lady of Pharis), and worked on Rune Soldier Louie.
In 1990, SNK and Kadokawa produced an OAV of the First Novel. Record of Lodoss War's first 8 episodes are, more or less, the first novel in its entirety. There are only two major differences known: That Shiris and Orson never met Parn on the way to Karla's (For the record, Shiris and Orson first appear in Novel 3), and that Beld's death is different in the First Novel. Mizuno made these changes just to make it a little different from the novel that it was based on.
Now, that leaves only 5 episodes remaining, which is NOT enough time to do 6 remaining novels justice. Story Elements of Novels 3-7 were taken and used to make the final 5 episodes of the OVA. Taking the Sceptor of Domination from Shooting Star is actually the plot of Novels 3 and 4, and the Ressurection of Kardis is actually the plot of Novels 6 and 7. But to say that doesn't do it justice, for the novels have so many events, characters, and facts completly removed from the OVA.
The TV series ignores episodes 9-13 and tells the tale much more closely to the novels. Episodes 1-8 Cover Novels 3 and 4, with episodes 9-27 covering Novels 6 and 7. Unfortunately, the events of Novel 2 and 5 are merely mentioned. Novel 3, and the first episode of Chronicles, both start 5 years after episode eight (Death of Ghim) respectively.
