No way, dude, watch them. I just got done with the first OAV tape and I'm drooling for more. The tone (serious), animation style (realistic, bloody, fluid), and feeling (dark, moody, and fast-paced) is way different, but complementary. I've seen the first 2 Kenshin TV tapes and I really liked what I saw, but the dubbing on the OAVs is too good to pass up. Yes, I wrote that. The dubbing is excellent, as is the animation, and story.
IT IS Ruroni Kenshin, its the OAVs that provide the background on him back when he was Hitokiri battousai

Samurai X is the Kenshin OAVs, youve already seen it. It was just released in the states as Samurai X. It is the Kenshin OAVs, IT IS THE KENSHIN OAVS

Yeah, the regular tv series is being released by Media Blasters under the name Rurouni Kenshin and I believe there are 3 tapes out so far. And like 2 dvds, but one dvd contains like 2 times the episodes of a vhs.
ADV is the company releasing the Rurouni Kenshin OAVs, but they're being called Samurai X. They're being released in two tapes/dvds each one containing 2 eps of the oav. I think only the first one is out now, but vol. 2 should be released soon.
I actually rented the dub samurai x to see how it was, and it was actually very well done. I'd still prefer subbed, but I'm gonna wait til I get a dvd player before I buy it.

Maybe ADV thinks Americans can't handle Asian titles...that they need to be spruced up and sold under something more exciting and mysterious...crap, all crap.

Nooo!!!! You can't watch Kenshin dubbed!!!
You can't watch Anime dubbed!!!
It ruins the personalities of the characters.
The -only- good dub I have seen is the Viz Ranma½ dub.
But its only my opinion... and If I think that dubs of Kenshin should burn in hell for all eternity then I think I should have the right to think so.
well, i still prefer the subtitled ones.... whoever plans to get the kenshin tapes, i suggest you buy the dvds.
I just got the second OAV DVD in the mail today ...and wow, for a 4 part series it sure has an amazing story arc (and one hell of a closing). I just wish there was more :(
One of the great things ADV did do (at least on the DVDs), even though they changed the name to Samurai X they made the cover reversable with Japanese title on the flip side.
As for dubbing, it's gotten much better lately. I personally can't stand to read while I watch a movie, it just seems to pull me away from it (especially if there's action going on). Macross Plus had some of the best dubbing I've ever heard, and Samurai X had pretty amazing voices as well. But I can see both points ...
(sigh) for those of you that don't know the length of Rurouni Kenshin, it is.... 95 episodes, a 4 part oav and a movie.
I have seen the first 3 dvds, and the complete oav is out as "Samurai x, Trust and Betrayal"
So, unless you saw the original in japan or somehow got the fansubs... its going to be a loooooooong haul... let's see at 4 eps a dvd ... at one a month, the entire series would take about 2 years.

Weell, I saw the dubbed OVA at an anime expo a few weeks ago.
(The organizers asked us if we wanted dub/sub/or both, and the whole room is going,
DUUB!
SUUB!
NO, DUB IT!
No the dubbing sux!
YOu can't read the subtitles!)
I wanted the subtitles.... -_-
But the dub wasn't so bad, other than the fact that the STUPID American so-called 'voice actors' mispronounced
Tomoe's name wrong and said TOMO. Every time I hear that I just got the shivers.... EEEEEwwwww...
Also they can't say seppuku (sepuuku), sake (sacky), Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu( Mitsurugiroo), and Lord knows what else.
It's a very good film, though, charming really. You learn a lot about how the Samurais lived in those days...yes, just a masterpiece.
And another thing, Kenshin IS NOT A F***ING SAMURAI!!
Samurais were finished in the Meiji era, making Kenshin Himura NOT A SAMURAI! Anta baka?
