I have never heard of this show, and I was wondering if anybody could fill me in on it!

Since I'm really bad at summarizing a story(I mean REALLY REALLY bad)
I'll just give you a link to an older similar tread.

Ah, so you've heard of it eh? Then go see it! If you take a look at some of these threads and how much everyone is raving on and on about Vandread then you know it must be good.
Well it is! I can recommend this anyone! It is so damn good! It has everything: cool mecha, astonishing animation, cute girls, characters worth caring about, an intriguing plot and one of, if not THE, most cutest anime couple (D+H) ever conceived!
I can't recommed this enough. See it!

And on a related note, I claim membership to an anime club where I (with fellow conspirators death and DNA) persuaded the execs to screen some Vandread. Eventually we succeeded and guess what? Everyone loved it!

Oh and Master Jag - Nice Avatar

Now that I've got a little bit of time on my dirty claws, its time for...

DNA Master's Spoiler-Free Ultra-Compact Vandread Synopsis!

*Assorted cheers, occasional boo, one rotten tomato*

*DNA Master steps up to the podium*

Quiet, please! The Vandread Synopsis is about to begin! Vandread runs something like this..

Men and women live apart, women in orbital habitats above the planet Mejerr, men on the moon of Mejerr, called Tarak. Men and women have lived apart from each other for generations, each beleiving that the other is either bacteria, flesh-eating demons, or both. Consequently, war is pretty much constant between men and women, although it is mostly limited to border skirmishes.

Enter our hero, Hibiki Tokai. Hibiki is a 3rd class citizen, one of the faceless masses who slug their guts out for the higher classes. He's a little bit dissatisified with his lot in life. Make that a LOT dissatisfied. So he decides, at the provoking of his fellow workers, to steal one of the giant mecha used by the Tarak forces. To do this, he sneaks aboart the newly-refurbished flagship of the Tarak fleet, which happens to be departing for the battlelines shortly..... and hence Hibiki is taken along for the ride.

Once in orbit, Hibiki is captured! Surprise surprise... but the ship is attacked by fearsome, and awfully good-looking, female pirates!

*Gasps and blood noses throughout the audience*

After more shenangins, including being mistaken for an alien by one of the felmale pirates (DiTa, our female lead), Hibiki and two of his fellow Real Men (Duero McFile and Bart Garsus) are captured. Fearing their new vessel lost, and unwilling for it to fall into enemy hands, the Male High Command fires a couple of really big torpedoes at the ship.... but the ship dissapears in a flash of light just before impact, taking the female priate vessel with them!

Out in the depths of space, the ships reappear... only, something is wrong.. the ships seem to be merging together.... and, again, another surprise, an enemy attacks! Unknown cube-like fighters start beating the living daylights out of our heroes! WIll they survive? Or will they become yet another cloud of ever-expanding dust in the endless sea of the stars?

Watch to find out as Hibiki, his fellow Real Men, and the female pirates come to grips with issues such as Getting Along with your Enemy, Fighting for a Good Cause, Never Giving Up, and most importantly.... will Dita and Hibiki EVER admit they are in love?

All in all, a good series spaced well over 26 episodes, consisting of two seasons of 13 episodes each, with brilliant CGI and traditional cel-frame animation, a great plot, and of course, cute girls. Not to mention mecha design almost (but not quite) rivalling Hayao Miyazaki, and a pretty cool soundtrack to match.

Go watch it. It wins the DNA Master Uberotaku seal of approval! A rating of nine blood noses out of ten.

Meia alone gets 10/10 blood noses :p

My good friend DNA said:

Eh? Where did that come from?
I don't recall Miyazaki doing any mecha-related anime. Flying machines yes but not any mecha as I can see......

Okay well maybe those robots from Laputa could be an exception....

by 'mecha' design I actually refer to all mechanical objects in the show... something about those Big Alien Ships that Harvest People mothership just gives me the need to go have a cold shower... :)

There are only 13 eps (that's why there's a Second Stage! I wanna see it badly!), but those 13 eps are jampacked full of characterization, awesome mecha, and a neat story. Without making you feel rushed at any time!

If you've seen GONZO's other well-known anime Gatekeepers, throw any notions from that out the window. Except maybe the usual Tenchi Muyo formula (guy surrounded by PRETTY girls, with a main girl). They are two very different stories, but with the same awesome CGI (but Vandread has better!).

Enjoy!

Well I was just about to start a similar thread but it looks like I don't have to. Thanks DNA

BTW - Siren is releasing Vandread on DVD early in December here in Aus. Me thinks it's going to be quite dodgy though ;)

I've told my cousins and other people.

One of my dreams in life is to see all 26 eps of Vandread, on a very good DVD copy (original!), popped into the best wide-screen plasma or LCD TV, sitting on a very comfy chair, until it's all done! Our TV does not do the CGI enough justice!

By the way, I'm already seeing Vandread Second Stage. SUGOI!! WAY cool!

the term 'blue justice' will be explained later in the series, near the end of Second Stage...

was the word "seigi"? (justice in japanese) Oddly enough, I named one of the ships in my wargaimg fleet the "seigi"....

Wait a sec..........a war against men and women? strange how did it start? there has to be more than just germs?and how do they reproduce anyways?

DNA_Master
10-12-2002, 02:16 AM
THe male/female war was started about 100 years before the series, and started with the male leaders loading up one of the old colony ships and heading of to Mejerr's moon, Tarak, to set up a different colony.

Reproduction in males is achieved by Eugenics (Iron Wombs, or test tube babies), and female reproduciton is achevived through combination of eggs to form a child.

SPOILER-RAMA

The real reason for the split was at the behest of Earth (eg split or we frag the lot of you) in order to have unused (and hence better) reproductive organs for the Earth harvest.

A few more things....in episode 13 there is this kid sitting on the throne in one of the big alien ships-who or what is he? and when Hibiki made an appeal to join forces, an anti-earth team showed up-whats the deal with that? anti -earth are'nt they all from earth? and what happened to earth?

OK... time for DNA_Master to deliver anothe episode of...

NAZE NANI VANDREAD!
(The How and Why of Vandread)

*various applause from audience*

*DNA Master steps up to the podium, neatens stack of notes, tests the projector, and clears his throat*

"Ahem. First, let me introduce my lovely assistant, Ruri-chan."

*Ruri steps up next to DNA_Master*

Ruri: "Konnichi-wa"

*DNA turns back to audience*

"First question: Who is that little kid?"

http://users.bigpond.com/croweall/vandread/19eboss.jpg

"This is the Red Plexis Kid. Nobody knows his real name, however. This seemingly-young boy is linked to the Red Plexis controlling the Earth fleets. His task is to pilot the Ship-Destoryer (a special class of mothership) and destory excess warfleets of those who resist the earth harvest. However young this boy seems, his age is actually unknown, perhaps several hundread years. As this is an Earthling, his organs have most likely been replaced several times, ensuring immortality.

The throne he sits in is similar to the 'power core' of the Blue Plexis onboard the Nirvana. This allows interace with the plexis, hence control over the fleet. As the Red Plexis Kid has a closed, bitter heart, the Red Plexis is hence influenced by it and turns out kind of evil."

*DNA drinks some water, and changes the slide*

"Second question: Why did the anti-earth fleet show up? This is linked with Question 3 and 4, Arent the All from earth?, and What Happened to Earth?"

"This requires a bit of background explantion."

*click click*
http://users.bigpond.com/croweall/vandread/earth.jpg

This is Earth, as it is at the beginning of Vandread. Roughly 120 years ago, humanity reached the maximum limit of genetic modification. All genotypes have been catelouges, identified and used. There is no new genetic material to advance the human race, so humanity spreads to the stars.

Using one of the mysterious Plexis crystals as a powerplant, the colony ships are sent out to found new worlds and encourage evolution through survival and an increase in avalable environments.

20 years after the colony ships where sent out, for some reason a huge mechanical device was built around Earth, emcompassing the orbit of Luna. This screwed the tides over, and hence the actual surface of earth is a perpetual rainstorm. The survivors established habitats on the inside of the massive cogwheels. Over time, they came to believe that they, and they only, where the true humans. the colonists (who, meanwhile, had settled in and established their new homes), where nothing but animals to be harvested for the benefit of Earth.

Hence, the massive Earth Harvest Fleet was constructed using the second Plexis as its powerplant and controller. This fleet of unmanned ships cruises the galaxy, harvesting organs from planets where social conditioning has resulted in specialisation of specific organs and body components (reproductive organs from Mejerr/Tarak, skin from Melanos, spines from Antapos).

Now, seeing as earth has now gone ultra-utilitarian, the some of the colonies have decided to fight against the harvest. Melaos built its Anti-Earth Fleets, patrolling the space around Melanos and hunting down motherships in the hope of destorying them, saving their worlds and people from the Harvest.

Hibiki's 'quest' as the Nirvana travelled back to Mejerr/Tarak inspired the Melanos fleet, as well as the other spacegoing fleets the crew encounter on their travels.

As the resources of Earth are focussing on Mejerr/Tarak (due to that pesky Nirvana and the Blue Plexis), the Melanos fleet is free to dispach a taskgroup to assist in the defence of Mejerr/Tarak."

*DNA turns off the slide projecter, puts his notes back his satchel, and bows.*

"Thanks for paying attention! Naze Nani Vandread will return when you have more questions!"

*DNA walks off the stage, Ruri following him.*
