this all may seem rude... but i'm just being blunt and i've not much time for this post, so i'm using very unorganised open lyric...

well i finally finished Gasaraki two nights ago. i hadn't the chance to post unfortunately, as i finished it an hour after i planned to go to bed, and classes started yesterday. none the less, here's what i thought of it:

my first thought after watching this series is: whoever thinks this anime is confusing is a stupid ----.

my second thought after watching this series is: well, that wasn't a waste of money... but i could've gone without seeing this.

my third thought after watching this series is: it's a shame i only really loved three of the episodes. [those being the two flashback episodes and the last episode]

my fourth thought after watching this series is: i really loved the strategical/political side of this series. and i've definitely grown a larger respect for mecha and strategics.

my fifth thought after watching this series is: who the ---- compared this to Eva??

haha.. okay, don't get me wrong, i definitely enjoyed it. it's definitely not good enough to be up there with my other favourite "Class A" anime series [Eva, Lain, Boogiepop, BeBop, FLCL, Escaflowne..etc]. but rather, Gasaraki is definitely in the "Class B" category... along with the likes of Chikyuu Shoujo Arjuna, Key the Metal Idol, and Noir.

"Class A" being series i completely loved, actually got something personal out of the viewing, and walked away a different person than when i first began watching.

"Class B" consists of series i enjoyed, but my pleasures rarely {or in some cases, not at all} rose above simple enjoyment. these are series which i certainly would recommend others, but on a more personal level, they didn't quite captivate me or didn't challenge me in any way; mentally, spiritually, psychologically...etc.

don't know what else to say really. i predicted everything and had seen everything done before, bar the political side of it. it is a good series though. but i must end with one final statement... those two flashback episodes were ------- AMAZING. if they had more episodes like that, i probably would have definitely loved the series.

Some ignorant Evangelion fans who saw a shread of something from eva and proceeded to label it a rip off and compare it against eva. I don't know why since Gasaraki is completely different and is a politcal anime if anything....

The uneducated who just see a plot and Mechs is my guess...

Yeah I have to agree with you heart havok. It's a "Good" Series but not a "Great" Series. If anything it lacked depth. Yes the 3 episodes you mentioned were good, but everything else was normal. The whole Kaznarstan (Whatever that place was called) thing just went too long. Honestly. It could have gone for about 2 episodes. But I guess the Military aspect would be lost on it. But really it isn't even a good Romance Anime. And consider that it was building up to that, I was surprised. But I did like the concept, even if it was a bit slow.

Ah, haven't been in this forum for a while. Or even at AB for that matter...

Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed it heart havok. It got into my A-class series list mainly due to the political/strategy side of it, and also the intense enrapture it put me in for every episode.

I definitely agree with you about the two flashback episodes, they were fantastic. I was actually hoping for more of them as well, but I don't mind that there were'nt any more.

I'm not sure why it was compared to Eva, or by whom. Seems pretty stupid, they're completely different.

Well having only the first 2 DVDs I cant comment too much on what you've said. Im actually bothered that I now either gotta buy 6 more DVDs, or leave this series incomplete.

But I CAN tell you who compared it to eva:

"Combining the hard edge of modern thrillers with the frightening reality of tomorrow's super-science, Gasaraki's multi-layered story and unique blend of apocalyptic carnage and surreal mysticism automatically invite comparisons to another outstanding series;
the cult hit Neon Genesis Evangelion..." (opening sequence. Madman flash presentation)

I figure id post a little bit here since i havent in a while.

Reason why Gasaraki is on my top 3 series list is also the fact that it blends so many different things into one series. You have the mecha (and god knows im a mecha freak), you have the political/military triller going on (im a tom clancy lover anyways) and the realism. Although there are some people who dont beleive that the mecha are realistic, I do, its a large jump in the way of mecha being protrayed in a realistic environment. They are made for specific purpose rather than, oh ive created this machine of mass destruction that is impenatrable even by the strongest of weapons. And lastly, the slight mix of sprituality/occult. You take these 3 great things, mix them all together and you have a great series. There is tons of mystery, tons of relationships working and your sure to be on the edge of your seat by the end.

I couldn't have put it better myself. :)

Well, perhaps I could have, but I'd have been too lazy too...

I ran through gasaraki in roughly 1 day I didn't get a thing
what does TA stand for
what is symbol
why is that all the bad guys are related to the main character?
why is nothing told in the anime
why did I bother watching it?

I kinda not agree. Well, I agree that Gasaraki is a total Class B, I call this type "Wanted to take a sh*t higer than their asses afford them to"

I really enjoyed Noir, much more than Escaflowne, although both series have this horrible endings, more Noir (those last minutes are to be forgotten)

And about Key, well, I got by ep 8, but its actually one of my favorites. Its misterious enough without using those 'ultra dark mistery' cliches like boogiepop or lain. I have to finish it before making a final judgement.

But, back on topic, I was really dissapointed with Gasaraki. Expected too much.

Mecha realistic? Climbing buildings like they do? Wonder who gave them that data on concrete resistance.

"A+. Who needs Evangelion when you've got Gasaraki?"
I do.

Regardless of the unrealistic aspects of Gasaraki, you have to admit that it is more realistic than other shows featuring mechs.

That said, Gasaraki is.... an acquired taste. It definantly has it low points; the music leaves something to be desired, and the pacing is a bit off. I had trouble really getting excited or anxious about anything in the show.

However, the story, when you know what's going on, is good. It may sound like I didn't like it, but I did. It's a good show!

You didn't watch this series because all of those questions were answered over the course of the series :)
