What is it?

I finally found a place selling this anime in australia. So tell me, what is it about? What is the appeal? What genre of anime is it? (romance, fantasy, sci fi, hentai, ecchi, comedy, mindfuck etc)

Record of Lodoss War is the classic fantasy D&D anime IMO.., with your archetypal young hero going on his rights of manhood.., with a snooty elf.., a grim dwarf.., etc, as his 'guides' to the world...,
Originally based a series of novels, & D&D gaming scenarios..., it is a story of good vs evil.., where nations rise up to fight a war, that is being manipulated by a 'watcher'...,
There are various layers to the series..., & the story is beautifully told..., the characters, though archetypal, are not one-dimensioned..., they all have reasons to why they have chosen their particular path...,
I think the 13 part OAV series is great..., I never get tired of watching it...,
There is also the 26 episode TV series called Record of Lodoss War : Chronicles of the Heroic Knight..., obstensibly set 5 years after the OAV series..., I'm not so keen on this series..., it drags out of too long IMO.., & it doesn't seem to have the same spark of magic as the original OAV series...,

I just finished watching the Lodoss OVA and I love it. If you like fantasy, you should definitely watch this one. Though I've heard the series isn't quite as good, as EVA mentioned, I'm very curious to watch it also.

Well, I thought it was very good. I've only seen it twice (I don't have my own copy.), but I agree with what EVA said. I'm thinking of getting Legend of Crystania. I know it's connected to Lodoss War, but I don't remember if it's a prequel or sequel.

The artwork is very good, as well as the dialogue, IMO.

Don't get Legend of Crystania dude..., it sucks ass..., it has appallingly bad animation.., a plot that doesn't really make any sense, & has characters that were dead by the end of the OAV series (it's meant to be set 300 years after the events in the OAV series)..., it is utter, utter bollocks..., avoid like the plague..., you'd be better off spending your hard-earned cash on something else, & watching paint dry instead...,
