View Full Version : X/1999 X series (merged)
I havn't watched the movie yet (I'm gonna get DVD sooN!)
Would you recomend watching the movie first .. or start watching the series.. and as i get into it, then watch the movie?
Series. The movie is cramming the 1000's of manga pages into 90 or so minutes. Its a bloodbath, characters are introduced and usually killed off.
The series is more fleshed out, just about each character gets an episode dedicated to them. A lot of nice character developement takes place and you actually feel the tragedy over the deaths unlike in the movie.
The movie's deaths are different but even so, it could spoil a lot of stuff.

Get the series first, at least. The movie... You could pass on that one unless you wanted to rent it just to see the neat special events. As Reika said, the movie really crams a lot in for the so little time allotted.

Get the series first.
I don't see how anything in the movie could spoil you for the TV series though. Virtually nothing is the same between the two. They're separate continuities. Even if some of the same things happen, they happen in drastically different ways.

That is true but the fact that Fuma kills Kotori, Sorata dies for Arashi, Karen dies, Yuto dies, Seishiro dies, still remains. Sure they don't happen in the same manner or even the same order, but knowing they die, you don't consider that a spoiler?
More SPOILERS
Sorata doesn't die in the series. He comes close, but he survives.
EDIT: He dies. I'm just a moron.

To Reika:
SPOILERS
!
!
!
True though that may be, EVERYONE aside from Kamui dies in the movie (and certainly not in the series). And if one doesn't -know- that not everyone dies in the series, the movie isn't ruining anything because it would have led the viewer to believe that everyone will die. So for that reason, no, I don't consider it a spoiler.
And to Shale:
SPOILERS
!
!
!
Yes, he did. He survived his initial injuries in episode 20, but in episode 23 I believe it is, he does die, right after destroying half of Fuuma's face. Er, where'd you get that he survived anyway, out of curiousity?
I've only seen the movie. I was mightily confused :heh:
Yet more spoilers. You know the drill.
Simple. I got his near-death injury in episode 20 confused with the one that actually killed him in episode 23. I remembered being surprised that he lived (since he'd been going on about how he was going to die for Arashi since he met her) after the first one, and his death in 23 was so unsurprising (for the same reasons) that it didn't make nearly as much of an impression. Plus it's late.

the movie isnt a spoiler, its completly different, however, i suggest seeing the tv series first becuase when you see the movie first, you go on to watch the tv series expecting everyone to die and all this other stuff

I still consider it a spoiler, not in the fullest of most spoiler's nature but seeing the characters die a 2nd time just isn't the same, regardless how/when it happens. And like you mention, the movie will set you with the mindset of death. It's just more enjoyable not knowing whats going to happen.
I saw the movie first, and I'm just getting into the series now. I don't think it's any real big deal. I enjoyed the movie very much, and don't think it's really gonna spoil anything for me. Heck, the last time I watched it was about a year ago so I can't really remember all that much except the finale which I thought was pretty good.

 Okay Shale, now I understand.
Here's how I see it, in more simple terms now that I'm fully awake:
Some people die, and some people live. That's the most spoiling the movie does for the TV series. You don't know who (or perhaps more appropriately, you don't know who lives), you don't know how, you don't know the circumstances until it actually happens in the TV series. So it's only a spoiler after you've seen it, unless the hint that anyone whatsoever would actually die is considered a spoiler---but hell, this is a series about an apocalyptic battle.

Maybe snowcherry, being AB's biggest shoujo manga fanatic, or heerogf, who can't deny any bishounen, can answer this question for me, how closely does the X series follow the comic?

Hey, I think Yumiko deserves that title more than I do. I just might be the biggest US-based one, though ^_-
The TV series is pretty faithful (with a few very minor exceptions---some of which annoyed me, but I'm AB's resident Nitpicky Spoiled X Manga Pimp so -any- change annoyed me :heh: ) up through episode 20. The final four episodes are a completely new creation, and it's kinda obvious. I didn't like these four episodes, and I thought the very end went against the spirit of the manga (though it's not really -bad- per se; I like some aspects of it), but again, Nitpicky Fangirl here. Besides, with only four episodes left, I must admit that I can't think of any other way it -could- have ended.
In short, yes through episode 20, no from 21 onward.
EDIT: Duh. I meant through -20-.

Viz got them back, thank God; volume 8 was finally released last month.

Just wandering?
Possible spoilers below
For those who have seen the movie and the series... Well all know that "Characters Have" to die. If this series was redone so that it showed an alternate story line, would you buy it?

i think one of the things that was changed from manga to TV series was kotori having a weak heart (she doesnt in the anime)
btw guys, who's the character designer for X TV? its amazinly similar to Apapa Mokona's drawing

Kotori was changed almost entirely from her manga incarnation. Even her personality is totally different. I can't stand manga Kotori, but I really liked TV Kotori. She was sweet and reserved, but she still had a spine.
Character designer was Yoshinori Kanemori. CLAMP is notoriously strict about getting their anime character designs to look as close as possible to the manga designs.
As for Kusunagi's question...how do you mean?
Yeah Im surprised Pioneer put the OVA on the first disc. They should of put it on either volume 7 or 8.

Heh, if the manga ends differently then the series, isn't that sort of 3 alternatives already? Manga, movie, series all differing from each other?
The deaths in the show is what makes it so great, its a tragedy, its not supposed to have a happy ending. Where we are usually acustomed to happy endings (most of the time). Im surprised Chobits ended on a happy note, Clamp isn't known for happy endings.

I just saw the movie over the weekend and I LOVED it. The good thing is that I understood it the bad thing is that I didn't really understand the characters and the meaning of their deaths so I plan on watching the series or ready the manga to fill in that gap.

I bought the X TV series with the box a few weeks ago and it's one I keep coming back to. I'll admit that I really didn't know much about CLAMP before X. I had heard of them but was really jaded, i.e. so into like Eva and Esca that I never considered CLAMP. After watching X TV, I was really interested.
I had heard through conversations to stay away from the movie due to how constrained it was. The series does the manga more justice. As for the OVA, it is interesting to watch, but spoils some things. But taken in context, that the OVA was used to convince studios to take on the project, it's well done. It gives you an idea of where characters are and makes you wonder how they got there.
As you can tell, X is the main focal anime at the moment. As a side note, would anyone be interested in creating an X forum?

*cough (http://animeboards.com/t46806/s.html)* It's all over that thread.
Interesting to see that X TV is the CLAMP gateway drug XD If you really liked the characters, definitely give the manga a look. It's long and it drags a bit at some points, but it's worth it.
Nice Aoki avatar. He's unfairly underrated. ^_^

Yes that is true I got my hands on the first two volumes and I was amazed at how much more info was in it than the movie. I think I'll stcik to reading the manga before watching the series though....

Yeah. He looked interesting in terms of his character. Then I took a X character test and Mr. Seiichiro Aoki was my closest match. So it seemes fitting. ^_^.
I have actually begun to look into the Manga but the bookstores near me only go up to Vol. 2. :(
