Im trying to get a picture of what sort of *ix users we have at this messageboard.

The best way is to find out how passionate y'all are about your *ix platform.
So here's a quick query:

1. What O/S are you currently running as your primary?
2. What secondary O/Ss are you running?
3. What distribution/version of your fav. OS are you running?
4. Emacs or Vi?
5. Mozilla, Galeon, Lynx or Konquerer?
6. Which window manager/s?
7. For all of the above, WHY?

Let me go through mine:

1. Linux 2.4
2. Windows (not really secondary, they both do their fair share).
3. Debian for Linux, 2000 for Windows.
4. Vi
5. Mozilla & Galeon
6. Wmaker
7:
1. 2.4 kernel comes with many drivers the 2.2 kernels didnt have good support for. This includes the winbond driver and cs426x sound drivers.

2. Windows has programs like kazaa, dreamweaver and computer games. I dun wanna use VMWare, too expensive.

3. I fell in love with Debian right after using
mandrake. I'll always be a big forgiving towards mandrake because it showed me linux, however I can only work on debian now. It has everything I love and nothing I dont. e.g. apt-get.

4. Emacs makes no ------- sense. key combinations galore. Vi/m however has a range or simple, easy to remember commands that make editing a file quick, easy and smooth.

5. Mozilla comes with a mail program and I have used it since the early days. However Galeon loads faster and is simply more conveniant to use. admittedly there isnt too much difference between 'em, but I usually use mozilla for working on my website, testing various files, and checking email. Whereas I use galeon for tasks like viweing animeboards.

6. Wmaker is simply the nicest and greatest window manager. GNOME and KDE I used back in the earlier days of Mandrake and they were resource hogs. Thus, I never forgave them because I always had a lower end machine. Wmaker however is so ------- fast. Instant load, runs nearly every program from KDE or GNOME, conveniantly has multiple screens and a nice layout. Im a sentimental guy, and wmaker pulled me through the days of low ram and ---- cpu.

1. Linux 2.4
2. None :)
3. Mandreake 8.2
4. Vi
5. Mozilla
6. Currenly Enlighenment
7. For all of the above, WHY?

7.1 It came with my distro :p

7.2 All I need is avalable on linux

7.3 Currently using and tried only one distribution - Mandrake 8.2 It set itself up with no difficulty - so far has been preforming good, though the dependence on costum made packages for easy installation and somewhat uncommon system configuration is not a plus. (packages not made specifically for mandrake I have had troubles whith, but managed to set them up eventually :)) Overall I have used Linux on my system for about 2 weeks now and I am not dissapointed, it has made ma a happier person :) It was a choice between upgrading to XP, FreeBSD(due to lack of hd support and my relative inexpreience on the *nix systems ruled out this option) or Linux. So I chose Linux Mandrake becouse I read in many places that it was a nice distro for newbies to get started.

7.4 I learned to use it in school, while learning to program in C using b/w terminals connected to a 486 runing linux (aah.. the nostalgia :D)

7.5 I just like it better than other browsers :)

7.6 I find it most convenient for managing my windows :)

1. What O/S are you currently running as your primary?
Windows
2. What secondary O/Ss are you running?
Linux
3. What distribution/version of your fav. OS are you running?
Slackware, NetBSD or Win2k
4. Emacs or Vi?
Uh.. text editors? - Pico
5. Mozilla, Galeon, Lynx or Konquerer?
Mozilla, or Opera.
6. Which window manager/s?
KDE or Gnome
7. For all of the above, WHY?

I've yet to adjust the things I need to Linux/BSD, and Windows is presently the second best choice.
It's what I happened to install.
Slackware; advanced, yet not too advanced. NetBSD; nice packages system. Windows2k; it's the best alternative among the Windows OS.
If I've placed Emacs & Vi correctly; I selected Pico because it's simple enough for me to figure out.
I'm used to Opera and Mozilla.
KDE's what happened to be the first windows manger I used, it've kinda stuck.
