i must say i was surprised to find many people saying they hated Akira. i guess anything that gets well-known is both loved and hated, but i loved the movie, and know many other people who did. I will say, however, that when watching it, i was thinking "movie" more than "anime" so i enjoyed it more in that way. this probably means that the coming live-action film actually will appeal to many americans. anyway, i'm not exactly sure why i liked it... it definately isn't my favorite anime/anime movie, or even close. As a movie, not an anime though, it's probably on my top 10 list.

i didnt like Akira the first time i watched it, it was too complex for me and i wasnt able to follow, i remember when i first watched the movie, i kept thinking "when is this going to end!?!". i watched the movie a couple more times after that and i was able to follow and i realized that it was a great movie and a masterpiece

Same as Fatal Outlaw, its just that I like the animation when I first watch it, only started to realise its greatness after the second viewing and understand it more after watching it again. Akira is definitely in my top three anime.

I don't really hate it but I don't really like it either.

I hate it. Dull and boring. After an hour i was asking myself when it was going to end. But it didn't it lasted forever.

I loved it, watch every chance I get. Though the first time I saw it I fell asleep and woke up near the end, thought they were screaming "Canada" but the second time I got hooked on it.

I love it... Always have... It all just goes together. I personally think the people who don't like it just don't understand it fully.

Considering the enormous amount of material they had to cut in order to fit the manga into a movie, I think they did a pretty good job. I've never read the manga, so I'm not qualified to say which is better, but the movie made more sense to me after I watched it a few times and let some days pass between each viewing.

It is a complex plot in the sense that the effects and symptoms of many things are shown, but the causes of those effects and symptoms are only indirectly revealed. You have to figure out why those things are happening without being distracted with the sheer oddness and beauty of what you're watching.

I've seen the movie 5 times and just have mixed feelings on it right now, though it did something right for me to watch it 5 times.

I didn't mind it too much, though I did think it was a little boring. I won't be in a hurry to see it again

Can't I just like it?

I feel the same way about Ghost in the Shell and Jin-Roh. I think they're good movies, they say some interesting things and they look incredible. But they're not what I pop in when I want to watch a movie I love.

Not very good. I can't say that I hate it. I just think that it's the 2nd worst creation of anime ever made after Dragonball Z. It's boring and pointless. Yeah, there's a semblance of a plot, but it seems pointless and badly explained. And it doesn't give you anything to really care about. Why should I give a **** what happens to Tetsuo or AKIRA or those 4 kids they did experiments to?

It gets better every time I see it .. Problem is that everytime I see a bit of it I have a hard time turning away. It's overwelming.

As I had never read the manga and instead just watched the film, I had jumped in over my head when I first saw it. But after watching it a few times, I really came to enjoy it after a little while. At first, I wasn't crazy about it. Thought it was freaky and unusual, but the more I saw it, the more I liked it...

Akira is definitely an anime classic.

For me, its a definite "Love it!"

I can't really remember how many times I've watched it, but every time I do, I get that feeling of not noticing that time is passing.

i beleive that the fact that it was "poorly explained" makes it good. i like the anime i watch to make me think... when stuff is just... explained to me, it usually ends up being pretty boring. also, you should take note that if you really do care about stuff happening anime, you might be a little too into it. most of the time there isn't much more to care about than there was in Akira.

For me Akira is a ground-breaking title which started the journy of many otaku.

In other words, It's still a damn good anime.

I find it hard to believe that anyone could not love this anime. The only possibilities could be as to how weird it is, or maybe the ending.

I saw this a long time ago, in the mid-nineties before I was a regular anime viewer.

I found it interesting, but didn't love or hate it. It had nothing to do with my current state of watching anime.

Ah, but there's a huge difference between an anime that is poorly explained and makes you think. Akira did have a plot, and I was able to decipher it little by little. But the thought process was completely different from, say, trying to decipher the plot in FLCL, which is probably as confusing. The plot progressed poorly, and we got to see the boring aftermath of the real plot while being depended to figure out what happened before. In plot progression, there's a fine line between laziness and genius; AKIRA falls on the lazy side. You might enjoy the fact that you're put into a situation where the only way you'll pick up the plot is thru indirect sources and meaningless conversation. But that's just poor directing. Believe it or not, it's still the creator's job to provide small purposeful (though not obviously) clues so that the viewer understands. Otherwise, it's just a hodge podge. Which is what AKIRA is.

And by care, I don't mean I want to get real into it, although that's usually a plus. I want to see Tetsuo explode and feel sorry for him. I want to see this post-holocaust Tokyo and feel shocked. Instead, I saw both, and felt that they were both pointless happenings. With so serious a plot, character development should be equally serious; it shouldn't be simply up to the level of a chick flick, where you don't need to feel a connection with the characters.

What I don't understand about this Akira movie info is, how come AMERICANS are making it? Why not the Japanese?

How exactly do you replace Kaneda and Tetsuo with Americans?

About the anime, it was weird, but I'm better for the experience of seeing it. ^_^ If only to see the heights Japanese cell animation can take.

overall, I liked it...it was the first anime I had ever owned, so, It has a special place in my heart.

The only thing I don't like is in some of the songs, It sounds like the singers are having an asthma attack.

I have a theory why so many people like akira. Some people just simply like it. But AKira for many people was their first anime because of its age and popularity. First anime ussually holds a special place in people.

Akira didn't really strike me as great as everyone has proclaimed it to be. I remember watching and being utterly disappointed in the development of the story and the ending. I suppose it had to be the way it is...to appeal to more viewers, but for myself, I thought it was rather bland. It's just not in my taste of anime.

well, let's not compare AKIRA with FLCL, they're on completely different levels. as i said before, AKIRA is definately not one of my favorites. FLCL, on the other hand... well... if it's not my absolute favorite, it's definately one of them.

Well, I agree; comparing AKIRA with FLCL is like comparing the worst to the best... in fact, it IS comparing the worst with the best. But that's my point. FLCL is equally confusing, maybe even more, yet it can manage to explain its plot with well-placed evidence and explanations.

yeah... you win. x.x (damn... not used to losing, but i havn't been putting up fights very well recently)
but i FLCL is... much more confusing than AKIRA. AKIRA, after only seeing it 2 times... was pretty easy to figure out.
i've watched through FLCL 3 times now and i'm still asking questions.

Sure they can... Like I said thats what I personally believe, is that they don't understand it completely. I don't think people understand the friendship between Tetsuo and Kaneda. I don't think they understand the characters themselves. I don't think they understand the story as a whole, and I don't think they understand the tragedy or the intricacy of it all.

However, maybe they do... But I've had to explain Akira to a few people who hated it... And while they still don't think its the greatest, after watching it again, they said they enjoyed it more. I can't get them to like GitS or Jin-Roh though...

Also, everything was there in the movie to fully understand it... I don't know what you think was missing... The only talking I did about Akira was the explaining really. And the only outside sources I used were the manga, which I read a long time after seeing the movie. All the manga did was reinforce everything.

Lol, I think all that I just wrote sounds way to serious or harsh or some combination thereof... But I'm lazy and don't want to change it... However I just want to say that comparing Akira to FLCL is indeed definatley a bad thing... FLCL is so far above Akira its like comparing gold and lead, which is the point Psyk0 was trying to make... But I'll leave FLCL out of this, as I've got even more to say on that subject that even my closest friends care to hear. Heh, now after saying that I don't know if I'm defending Akira anymore or just smashing it into the ground, as I know not everyone likes FLCL either for some reason, and I can't for the life of me figure that one out. Since you don't even have to understand FLCL to have a great time watching it.

Oh yeah, one last thing... Akira has the screaming... I loves the screaming...

I have to say I liked Akira, but my first anime was Evangelion, and I liked that a lot more. I was impressed by the animation though - akira is nice eye candy.

I personally think Akira was not done any justice being made into a movie - making a 6 part graphic novel into a one part movie was never going to work.

I would have loved to have seen it as a six part OVA instead of a movie that left out soooo much. Alot of people find it hard to understand for this very reason.

The animation in the movie however is still breathtaking till this day!
