I've been thinking about buying the Inuyasha DVDs sold on eBay and other various internet sources; I think they're the HK or Hong Kong bootleg DVDs I've heard people mention on other forums and the like. According to what I've seen on eBay, these DVDs run on all players regardless of region coding and come with English subtitles.
So what's the deal? Do they really work on all DVD players? Do the English subtitles actually correspond with the dialogue properly and are understandable, and so forth? And not just the Inuyasha ones, but "bootleg" anime DVDs in general?

The gramar and translation are pretty good, although, there are some typos and misspellings every once in a while.

You get what you pay for. It depends on the company but the dubs, video quality, audio quality all of it will be less than the real thing. Do research on what company the DVDs are from. Nost common problems are -like Tristan said- bad timing and grammar in subs. Sometimes they just don't translate a sentence or a scene or they just botch the job so badly, they might as well have not translated the scene.
Vid quality usually is LD/VCD quality. On occaision you'll find VHS/TV and on very rare occaision you'll find DVD. Audio is always stereo no matter what it says on the box. Cases are usually not to below average, but sometimes they're just heavenly ^_^. To die for drop dead gorgeous cases ^_^. (http://animeboards.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=537615881#post537615881)
