Okay. I'm confused on a couple of things.

1) Who exactly is Akira and what happened to him to make them put him in the jars?

2) What exactly happened at the end?

I'll go watch it again and will come back.... i understood the whole thing, but now its been so long i don't remember, so i'll need to watch it again. But from what i remember, i'll try to answer.

1) Akira was a kid who was the next step in humanity evolution, they did all kind of research on him, but the science of the time wasn't good so they decided to seal him in jars so that when the science was advanced enough, people could research on his parts. He also was responsible for destroying Tokyo in 1988.

2) Akira awoke at the demand of the blue kids, and he swallowed Tetsuo and Kaneda, but the kids sacrified themselves to bring back Kaneda. He kinda reproduced what happened in 1988.

Again its been a while, so i might remember some stuff wrong.

Thanks Foryth, now I even understand it a bit better :D
What I don't get is when tetsuo is fighting with those punks and his guts spilled out of his stomach, I guess he was seeing things :| *laughs at the part with the teddy bear and toy car thing* Dude, that part was trippin' LMAO!
And how was Tetsuo able to get that weird mechanical arm and transform into that big pile of ----...

To the first question, yes Tetsuo was hallucinating.

For the arm, well when it was shot by Kaneda, he used is power to rip so metal and circuits from the ball where was held -Akira- and formed it into an arm.

For the transformation into a big pile of ----, well... my theory is that with his powers, his body was able to regenarate, but because he put the arm there, the flesh couldn't take the place it was supposed to so it spread out and this triggered what was fated to happen because his body couldn't hold the overwhelming power and it started to grow in a mass of flesh.

not to be offensive, but what accually happend to tetuo's arm was:

when you obtain the next phase of evolution, you transform(like the blue children). science developed a medicine to slow the process down. tetsuo didn't take his medication for a while and.......you know what happend. thats why he said "you must get my medication" (or something to that effect) to his girlfriend.

ok. as for one, the akira project was what was happening to those kids. they were scientifically altering people's minds to give them telepathy. the only really successful ones were Tetsuo and Akira. But Akira caused the destruction of Tokyo, so they killed him and seperated his organs. You see, Akira was so powerful, physical death could not stop him. So they had to seal him up and away from the rest of the world.

2. Kaneda got engulfed in the white destruction caused by Akira. But Tetsuo, being like Akira could use HIS power to save Kaneda. Only because he remebered what they had before the power came, their friendship, which he showed to Kaneda before letting him go. Kae also helped bring him back by calling for him ... does that help ?

Heres another question about Akira.

When it was screened on SBS last night the reviewer (Des Mangan) mentioned that it had a message to get across. Unfortunately, I was much too dense to notice this subtlety. Can anyone help me out?

I think that the message was that science will cause humanity to destroy themselves

Your answers have been very helpful..but I have another question: Des Mangan...why does he exist?

Because if he wasn't there, which geek would be chosen to introduce our anime and be there to make everyone think every anime fan is a geek

to truly understand akira watch it like a hundred times you see something you missed every time. This is the main reason it is one of the best.

Hopefully someone who doesn't re-use their intro script every time.

I was re-recording it over my previous recording, and noticed that the intro was word-for-word identical to the last time (about a year ago?)
