OK, with last night's episode on Adult Swim, the reincarnated Kikyo tries to kill Inu-Yasha again, and we get more backstory:

Inu-Yasha and Kikyo were a secret item, and IY was originally going to use the Shikon Jewel to become fully human instead of full demon, and live together with Kikyo.

Kikyo's memory: on that fateful day, IY came up behind her, gave her those mortal wounds, and stole the jewel. Now she hates him with every fiber of her being for his betrayal.

IY's memory: Kikyo is the one who betrays HIM by shooting the arrows at him, and trying to kill him.

Obviously one of them doesn't remember things right, or if they both do, there's a 3rd (and possibly 4th) party involved. Some kind of shapeshifter who hates them both?

Since I don't follow the manga, I have no idea how long I have to wait for the anime to clear this up, if it does. Feel free to spoil me on the answer to this little mystery.

SPOILERS

It's actually Naraku (who you'll meet later) who changed his form and attacked them both. So both are remembering accurately. If you want more info on why, just ask me.

There were two episodes shown Saturday night. Did you see both of them Bradster? If I'm not mistaken, the first one had the situation you described, with both Kikyo and Inuyasha thinking it was the other who did the betraying, while part of the second one stated or at least strongly implied the spoiler posted by Yasei Chi, that there was a third party shapeshifter (Naraku) who was involved. The impression I had from that second episode was that Naraku had attacked Kikyo, but not Inuyasha. Guess I was wrong there though.

But yeah, I think that second episode at least partially explained how both Inuyasha and Kikyo could be remembering things correctly in their minds. They just haven't figured out exactly how both stories can be true at the same time.

No, I didn't know about the 2nd episode, because I usually turn the tube off after the end credits.

Hmm. I'd completely forgot about Chris "The Ranma 1/2 FAQ" Rjik's site. I didn't know if he was still maintaining it..

Ah. I just started taping the entire AS block of shows on Saturday night since I'm not always around to watch it when it airs. Apparently you're not alone though; I think others on the board mentioned missing the second show or at least not knowing it was on until 11:30pm that night. I thought they advertised it better than that, but I guess I was wrong.

Thanks for the pointer, pip. I think I did see that web site before, but there was so much stuff translated already, I didn't start reading it. :) Maybe I should though, at least the early stuff that I didn't see on TV.
