I noticed that the four beast gods also make an appearance in Fushigi Yugi. Are they prominent in Japan? Because at first I thought they were made up, then I found out they are more of a folklore or something like that, and now Im wondering how popular they are. In both series, Suzaku is a red-head, and have some connection to birds. That stupid bird annoys me soo much

Anywho, I'm just wondering if anyones got info on these four gods :)

Well I don't have any but I did notice something else that reminded me of another anime, it was a the member of the Spirit Warriors, the face painted sumo looking one. He reminded me of Honda from Street Fighter

Uh yeah, that one's probably a coincidence there Hellian.

As for the main thread question, yes those gods have existed in Japanese Mythology for a long time, way before either of these animes were made. Both borrowed from the Mythology in different ways to shape their world.

Genbu, Byakko, Seiryuu, and Suzaku are each gods of the east, west, south, and north (not respectively, I forget their individual positions). This is actually explained in Fushigi Yugi.

Yu Yu used the names as more of a fun mythology reference for their characters, the four Saint Beasts.

I know this is off topic but i've noticed another similarity, the Spirit Wave. Of course most of us would be familiar with the Kamehameha of the Dragon Ball universe, and the Hadouken of the Street Fighter universe, in the beginning I thought the growing similarities of this attack was just a coincidence.

However, I have began to wonder if this attack was ever actually done IRL long ago, it may sound stupid but think about it. Kamehameha from DBZ, Hadouken from Street Fighter, Sekiha Tenyouken from G Gundam, and now the Spirit Wave. This is simply brain storming I have no true clues to point out this theory, and yes I know it seems childish but after realizing the same attack is in more then 2 or 3 animes you lose the idea that's it a coincidence

when i first saw yusuke do the spirit wave i instantly thought of the kamehameha. even the way he stands and positions his hands is almost similar.

Although what isn't made clear is the fact that when Gen Kai uses that super powered technique to take out Dr. Ichigaki's students and return them all back to normal, she calls that the Spirit Wave.

Then all of the sudden the Spirit Wave becomes a some super powered punch.

But I guess Kai has a lot of tricks up her sleeve. She as the Spirit Reflection Blast, and the Spirit Gun and Shotgun, and etc.

That she does, although I am wodnering how she even knows the Spirit Gun, that had to of been how she developed the Spirit Shotgun and the Spirit Wave.

I think, this is just a theory though that she long ago was under the employ of Koenma as a Spirit Detective. How else could she possibly know the Spirit Gun? I mean she even improved it with the Spirit Shotgun and the Spirit Wave itself not to mention the Spirit Reflection Blast. Another peice of evidence that leads me to believe she was once a Spirit Detective is the unfirom she wears in the Dark Tournament is similar to the one Kurama wore during the time he was in Spirit World with Koenma while Yusuke and Kuwabara were sent to rescue Yukina, he also wore it for a period of time during the Tournament.

The four gods are also mentioned in Bakuretsu Hunters at the end of the anime ~ they don't actually show up but someone calls on their power.
