I have heard people say that both of these are similar. Anyone see the similarities?

Yes I am talking about the japanese live action movies. I don't see that much similar about them myself.
I don't see much that is similar between them either, other than the fact that they are both Japanese and both have fantasy elements. Quite broad similarities indeed.

I have seen both the North American and Japanese release of "The Ring" and they really have nothing to do with Boogiepop Phantom other than both being a dark fantasy film. By the way Boogiepop Phantom > The Ring.

Not a thing I can see the same.

I thought there was nothing similar about them. On the madman Ring release there is an episode of Boogiepop Phantom. They must have thought that they were similar.

in Japan, they are both considered psychological thrillers.
one great similarity i noticed, is that they both [less the u.s. version] deal with urban legends and gossip as well as the supernatural. i'd definitely consider these similar. certainly not at all by story but rather, by their many themes... certainly Boogiepop has more. but some are similar, some some only contextually related... and surely, others aren't similar in the slightest.

Come to think of it, I agree with what heart havok mentioned to the simlarities in themes of Ringu and Boogiepop Phantom (minus the story). If you look at it from a different perspective, you'll notice the themes.
Jebus, you have a sharp eye on these matters

by the way... by them using the katakana "Ri-N-Gu" they are stating that the title is "Ring" as opposed to "Yubiwa" which would translate to "Ring" [that would be as in 'ring' for a finger]. so the title isn't "Ringu".. it is "Ring" without definite definition.

The book version of Ring seems to focus on some of the matters at hand in Boogiepop as well, at least thematically. In the book, almost all of the victims of the curse were alone when they died and had one especially had felt quite lonely throughout his life. The only exception to the dying alone idea was the couple, but even they were trying to get out of the car, away from each other. ::shrugs:: but I was just quickly read through it.
Oh yeah and there's the questioning the development of humanity, the existence of people with certain evolved (impliedly) abilities, etc.
