Now I know that Akira had something to do with it, but what caused Akira to blow Tokyo up on the 16th of July, 1988? In the movie there is that flashback of where Akira and the other children were playing with experiments and he blew up the T.V. Now he looked happy there. So what caused him to go crazy? Was it too much experiment that was done on him so he just got sick of it? Did he realize his full power and decided to wipe himself out so no-one could use him as a weapon. I'm not really sure what cause Akira to well... Go Nuts.

I think what caused him to get so angry and go mad was because he was kinda lonely, everyone was mean to him and got picked on a lot and probably just got sick of it all. Him and Kaneda always fight too and I think he's a bit jealous of Kaneda and that possibly causes him to go mad. I think he is just an emotionally unstable person, thanks to lifes problems... and experimentation over the years.

Lots of stuff got blowed up real good.

Honestly, i think the same thing happened to Akira that happened to Tetsuo...he lost control of his power, and fuled by his deep seated rage..he 'sploded.

Akira simply could not contain his power, and it was all released at once. This was stated in the manga.

Yeah Akira's body simply grew too weak to contain such a great power. There's a reason that he was stuck on that lab table with all the sensors on him. He was a large source of power that was in a poor container.
