There are 3 options English Original
English New
JapaneseNow I don't want this turning into another Sub Vs Dub War, I just want to know which version tells the best story.

I'm going with the new English dub by Animaze studios.

Madman have the best extra for Akira S.E, the old dub! Who needs all the other sh!t.

One of my best friends has had the original Akira VHS English dub for years. When he heard the new dub, his main complaint was that Kaneda sounded and acted less like a gang member and more like a tough joker. I think most of it was that the English VA who did him also did Vash in Trigun. I personally don't see the problem at all. I like the new script and actors better.

Comparing the Japanese vs the new English is hard because I haven't listened to the Japanese many times. I've stuck with the new English dialogue for most of my viewings. I guess that says something itself.

I haven't actually watched Akira with it's new English dub yet (even though it's in 5.1)..., the old English dub was okay.., but I've seen the movie more times subtitled, & that's the version I'm used to...,

I've enjoyed the new dub more than the old dub. I remember in the old one the lip sync was pretty bad but in the new one its right on. However, I can't remember what the original japanese sub sounded like.

If you ask me, the original VHS dub release was the best version/format. It was full screen, but the voice acting is top notch, and much better than the rerelease dub, despite lower quality sound.

though Kaneda's voice seemed somewhat annoying at the beginning.

I actually just borrowed the new release DVD from a friend the other day, not knowing that there even was a new dub. After trying to select Japanese in the options about 800 times only to have it revert to the english dub every time (still haven't figured out why), I caved and let the dub play.

In my opinion, they did a very good job with the dub this time around. I think it's right up there with the Japanese subbed version, and definitely better than the original dub.

The old dub suffered from poor voice acting AND poor translation.

They also oversimplified things - Tetsuo and Kaneda screamed out each other's names SOOOOO many times in the old dub rather than accurately translating what the Japanese VA's had said.

Kaneda being Jimmy Flinders (Liquid Snake, Leonardo of TMNT) was kinda cool... besides that, uhh-uhh. The old dub blew.

The Japanese VA's are great too, but I'll go with the dub on this one.

Sometimes, the American VA's do such a good job I can't help but like 'em - like with Cowboy Bebop or Evangelion.

On the other hand, sometimes they're terrible - like with Ninja Scroll or Beserk.

I'm very picky about dubs and am almost never satisfied, but Akira's new dub is very good and is my preferred method of watching.

The only reason I prefer the new English dub to the Japanese original is that they didn't bother to remaster the Japanese mix, so it's still mono, while the new dub is in glorious surround sound.

*cough* *sputter* EVANGELION???!?

That dub was AWFUL!

Must I quote the essay written by my friend, in a careful analysis of the first few episodes in both dub and sub format?

It is quite extensive.

I definately agree. Terrible, almost as bad as Kenshin's English dub. I didn't realize anyone actually listened to it :vomit:

The only anime I can listen to with English dubs are Bebop, Trigun, Akira, and Rahxephon.

To each his/her own I guess.

Spike Spencer is the reason most people hate Shinji.
