View Full Version : Dub rant
Many of you must have seen it on TechTV (dubbed version), am I correct?
Then you'll know what I'm getting at... Crest of the Stars has a bad dub. And I mean WRETCHED. If it weren't for the world's worst dub job, I would have actually gotten interested in the series.
So is the original Japanese version any better?

Is the original japanese any bet....?
*face faults, then smacks KenKen over the head multiple times*
of course the original japanese is better. Far better than the dub in fact. I actually don't have a problem with dubs at all, but Crest of the Stars is the one of the only series that I will only watch subbed.
I didn't see it on Tech TV though, although it should have been the same as what is on the DVD's. I have all four Crest DVD's and the First Battleflag/Banner of the Stars DVD, and they have both subbed and dubbed on them.
I WILL grant them this however. Banner of the Stars Dub is better than the COS one. By gigantic levels of unparralled proportions. All of the voice actors are the same, save I think Spoor, who is now voiced by a really fitting VA for the dub, though I could be wrong, and maybe spoor, like all of the other dub cast that returned, just got a whole lot more into character and deliver their lines much better. Japanese version of Banner of the Stars is still better, but personally I wouldn't say Banner has a BAD dub like Crest does.

I found both Jinto and Lafiel's dub voices to be extremely robotic, unemotional and monotonous. I mean sheesh, is it really that hard to find better voices? It kind of ruined the series for me.

One of the worse dubs I've ever heard. It wasn't even funny this time. :( Luckily I'm not really into CotS anyway, but I might have been if the dub was better.
Peace. V
Actually I thought Jinto's voice was the only decent one.
But Lafiel... ugh... You all know Relena from Gundam Wing? Yeah, multiply that by 56,000.

You should try the subtitled version if the dub was that much of a problem for you.
RE: Lafiel's robotic voice
This was a mistake made by the english VA, but an expected one. You see, Lafiel is SUPPOSED to have a hard time communicating with other people in a non-diplomatic/military manner. Thus, it is said, and I quote, that she can often come off as cold and emotionless to those who don't know her that well.
That is what the english VA was trying to accomplish, but missed a few things and didn't get Lafiel's personality just right.

I would try the subbed version but I'm too cheap to actually buy the DVDs... if its better it might be worth it though, I wish Tech TV showed the sub instead. :look:
I usually watch dubbed anime because i don't feel like getting the subbed or doesn't have sub on it. i've watched pretty bad dub... but i think crest of the stars took the cake... it was horrid, i couldn't watch it so... i'm not sure if i should say "did i miss anything"

You can NOT watch Crest of the Stars dubbed. If you've only seen Dubbed, it doesn't count as actually seeing it.
And the idea of buying a sub shouldn't be a problem anymore. I used to be like that when VHS tapes came as seperate Sub and Dub formats, but DVD's come with both!
I have no problem buying all the DVD's for a series. Spending 80-100 dollars on a series is damn cheap. I mean, I have nothing but money sitting around every month to use on anime and the occasional video game, so to me my thoughts are always "well, what should be buy this month." And I still put plenty in savings too. It's just that I don't spend my money on any other non-necessities. A lot of people spend money on car related material, extra clothing, stuff like that. I buy clothes only when I need them, don't like music so don't need CD's or Stereo, and the only other things I really buy are Pewter Statues of Dragons, and I can only get those when I get to this shop in Monteray.
To be exposed to a lot of anime, you need to buy DVD's. Any cheap bastard who resorts to Fansubs shall DIE BY THE SWORD:mad:

Well, as far as the dub goes, since the series doesn't mention anything about Earth or Earth culture, I'm putting it down to a cultural thing;)
Even the dub fans on AnimeOnDVD's English Track forum admit that Crest of Stars dub is well how do I put it.....crap.
Though many are saying Banner of the Stars is a massive improvement much like Robotech Said.
I could have sworn this anime was made in the 80s since the VA was so bad. When I looked up info on this, I was surprised that this was made in 99! Whoever VA Lafiel and Jinto should listen to their own VA to show how badly they VA.

If some people are worried about the crappy dub job, then just buy the Crest of Stars DVD Collector's Set, when it comes out in August for just $50 (4 DVDs). Watch the show, or else you'll be missing out on one of the better written series to come out recently... i'm out.
I'm getting it but I'm waiting for them to release a box set with COTS, BOTS, and BOTS II all in one.
