i've just realized that nobody actually dies at the end of the eva movie except for the people that were murdered by other humans(notice that at the end misato's cross necklace is nailed to a telephone pull like a grave for her).remember the part where shinji is talking to kaoru and rei in his dream and you see a bunch of people lying dead naked in the water in the backround and you see the backrounds change from lcl,to trees, and then to a city street.as the backround changes to a street you see the dead people come back to life and start walking next to shinji, rei, and kaoru.shinji wanted everyone to be alive again even though he would continue to be afraid and run away.so kauru and rei granted shinji his wish.asuka came back to life because the AT-field inthe eva protected her and she was not killed by other humans. at the end of the movie when you see asuka and shinji lying on a beach in a world that looks deserted and depleted it turns out that they were just in an odd place on the earth.thank you(araigato)

I don't agree with you... everything is correct except for the part where you say

'except for the people that were murdered by other humans'

Noone dies... even the dead become lcl... Rei takes their souls to the lcl stage... the body is not important... In the tv series Misato and Ritsuko are talking about the Instrumentality... showing they didn't died...

Discussions of the End of EoE are notorious and pop up every few seconds. Oh well:

I think that the end is simply the world's New Genesis. I believe that everyone is Instrumentalized and Shinji decides to maintain his own AT Field because, while it brings sorrow and pain, it also allows people to, symbolically, touch each other. The world may never return to normal, but people willing to reform their AT Field will return. Asuka chooses to do so, and this allows her to caress Shinji, and feel pain and disgust again ("I feel sick").

Still, those last few minutes are mighty damn confusing.
