Kamui not taking the sword?

Part way through episode 1 in X the series, Kamui comes to take the sacred sword so that he can leave Tokyo immediately.

The father of his old friends is its protector, and says he has to take it from him in combat to prove that he should have it.

Kamui fights him, and dominates the battle. Later, we see the father at the dinner table with bandages on his arm, indicating the injury from the fight.

However, the sword is still in his possesion at the shrine, and it is later stolen by Nataku.

So why didn't Kamui take the sword and leave like he said he wanted to? Did the father somehow fight him off? Is this revealed later in the series?

I was confused by this at first too.

Kamui isn't fought off by the father. Instead, as far as I can tell, he's persuaded by the father to stay in Tokyo for awhile and prove that he's worthy to have the sword. When he's talking to the man by the coffee machine (second episode, I think?), his words imply that's what happened. (And derned if I can remember off the top of my head what those words are...) Anyway, watch that scene again, and maybe you'll see what I'm vaguely referring to.
