Here's something I'm sure very few people might have picked up on while watching RahXephon. There's a similarity between Yutaka Izubuchi's RahXephon and Yoshiyuki Tomino's Yuusha (Brave) Raideen. I mean from a purely mecha standpoint. This topic may contain spoilers, so do not continue reading if you don't wish to learn anything before you see it for yourself. This is your only warning.

...................

Yuusha Raideen (1975)
RahXephon (2002)

OK, where do I begin? How about a few pictures?

Raideen (left), RahXephon (right)

First, mecha design. Notice the armor, the way it's designed in overlapping plates. Notice the simple tent-shaped shoulder armor. Notice how the feet are oddly designed, coming to a point. Notice how the chin is long and the face is recessed back a bit.

Secondly, weapons;

1. right arm blade - RahXephon's is energy, Raideen's is physical
2. left arm bow - RahXephon's is energy, Raideen's is physical
3. voice - RahXephon sings, Raideen has God Voice

Thirdly, features;

1. measurements - RaXephon 50 metric tons; Raideen 52 meters
2. both mecha are supposedly ancient
3. both mecha's faces are covered before being piloted
4. both pilots enter the mecha by being "absorbed" into it
5. both mecha are supposedly divine
6. utilizing either mecha too much will eventually damage the pilot
7. both mecha's pilots come from the kingdom of Mu

OK, there are some differences. Like Raideen can transform into "God Bird" mode and RahXephon cannot, and Raideen has an abundance of other weapons (hey, it's a 1970's super robot) as well. But the basics are still there. And Akira and Ayato are both descendants from the Kingdom of Mu! Even the plot terminology is similar.

Let me explain how this is all possible. As some of you may know, Izubuchi is the director for RahXephon, his first attempt in anime direction. Tomino was the director for Brave Raideen (first half of the series). Now Tomino and Izubuchi have worked together in the past, namely mecha design for Char's Counterattack and almost _all_ the design work for Gundam 0080. Here's how I see this playing out;

Tomino and Izubuchi are probably friendly with each other. For Izubuchi's first outing as a director, he wanted a really good mecha design. But he's not forgetting the people who got him where he was. So either Izubuchi asked Tomino to borrow his "Raideen" design (it's old and obscure, few would remember it), or he copied Raideen as a credit to Tomino for allowing him to design some of Gundam's more successful sequels. In either case, there's little denying that Raideen and RahXephon are very similar.

A poster called Menoumaru from this thread (http://pub52.ezboard.com/futmanimefrm2.showMessageRange?topicID=117.topic&start=1&stop=20) was the first person to bring to my attention the RahXephon/Raideen simularities which I had forgotten till I read this post of yours.

Just going over that thread again I noticed this.

Director & RahXephon Design:
- Yutaka Izubuchi
(Raideen, Parlabor)

Is that correct meaning that Izubchi worked on Raideen as well as working with Tomino on other animes? Or was whoever supplied that information wrong?

Anyway the poster first noticed the Raideen connection after seeing the preview to episode 13 and he notices it more and more after.

Anyway thanks for typing this up you won't mind if I link it to this thread (http://forums.animeondvd.com/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=11&topic_id=12137)?

The weapons are particularly significant (I can't remember if Menoumaru brought this up or not). Raideen has a "Rising God Go-gun" which fires the "God Arrow". Now we can talk on and off about "typical" mecha, but one with a bow and arrow is not that common.

As far as I know, Izubuchi did not have anything to do with Yuusha Raideen. I think his debut was as the mecha designer for Toushou Daimos, and later as mecha designer for Mirai Robo Daltanias.

And sure, you can link this thread wherever you like.

The Animeondvd thread i linked to (which predictibly turned into a it's a clone fight) had one reply to my post linnking this thread.

Cool. I already knew all this info, but it's the first time i see a pic of Raideen. By the way, Izubuchi mentioned Raideen as the main reason he did RahXephon (he says he always wanted to design a mecha more "human" like Raideen, mentioning how their faces get pissed off and have expressions).

I think seeing the Rah with the Energy arrow weapon is what made Menoumaru fit together the Rah/Raideen connection. Ayato summoning RahXephon in ep 20 didn't help with that but every good Super Robot show needs a RAHXEPHON!!!!! or <INSERT MECHA> summoing yell^^

Interesting. Brave Raideen was actually the first anime I ever saw when I was a kid, barring Speed Racer. Every Sunday at 6pm I used to turn to channel 22, which at that time was a Japanese station dedicated to serving L.A.'s Little Tokyo population. I watched a show called Kikaida, it was a live action super hero show made by the same people who made Kamen Raider and Go Rangers, I think. The recent anime Android Kikaider is based on it. Eventually they showed all of the episodes and then they moved on to a new show, and that was Brave Raideen. This was back when I was in the 1st grade, so... yeah, must have been 1976. Then they showed Getta Robo G, and then Go Rangers. (which I didn't like for some reason) Anyway, I only saw one epsiode of RahXephon because it was free on a NewType DVD, and it didn't do anything for me. Maybe I'll check it out after all.
