To begin with, I notice by your post-count that you joined animeboards for the sole reason of making this post...



Secondly, have you seen the full series? Dont criticise the plot until you have seen all of it is a good starting point.

Also, if you watch the full series, it actually DOES address this issue of Chii being a robot... and if it IS perverted for Hiedeki to fall in love with one. Which is one of the GOOD things about this series.


Anyway, as has been said before, there ARE male persocons (if I could be bothered, I'd go through my VCDs and take screenshots), and it IS an anime, so get over it.


If you want women-as-sex-object animes, you should watch something like Hanuyukio Maids or Legend of the Overfiend... chobits doesnt even come close.

I was reading through Newtype USA Issue 3 2003, and it had a couple of interviews with the staff of Chobits.... interestingly enough, chobits is actually AIMED AT GIRLS (dont forget, CLAMP is an all-female group!). The sexuality is meant to be realistic but not explicit, and yes, the anime is meant to have more background and depth than the manga did... :)

OK, the argument runs as such:

DNA_Masters reason why most anime robots are female.

Your average robot is much more powerful than a human. They are faster, stronger, tougher, smarter, can go for longer without sleep, have few weaknesses, and are practically immortal and never age. Obviously, the 'frankenstein complex' can kick in here, making robots such as Chii and Mahoro (mahoromatic) something to be feared in society.

The way to overcome this is to have them in a form that is the least threatening. Cute (bot not 'hot'), young (but not TOO young), and female is possibly the best form for a robot, as a robot like this will appeal to both men and women for the following reasons:

MEN: Most men will not see a cute girl as a threat, will suffer less blows to ego when said cute female robot does something better than them, and will be less likely to act violently towards them. (thus reducing harm to humans)

WOMEN: Lets face it... women will nearly always get along with each other (better than two males), so a building a robot to be cute (while not hot) will help women to get along with them, without being threatened by their looks or agelessness.

This is why most anime robots are cute and female. Its nothing to do with gratuitus fanservice or fanboy fantasy-fulfullment (well, at least not from a rational viewpoint). Any questions, fire away. (this is particulalry aimed at YOU, ununu, seeing as you are yet to present your arguments after your initial post)

just so i dont repeat too many things already pointed out, i find myself clearly with the pro-Chobits side. i am a female, and do not find anything offensive or degrading about the series. they *do* address issues of relationships between humans and persocons, whether its imtimate *or* a family type of love. <somewhat of a spoiler> they also do address the fact that Hideki cannot have sex with her or do anything below her belt, so she is clearly not a sex slave of his. </somewhat of a spoiler> also, like pointed out before, CLAMP *is* a group of 4 female artists and this series could be viewed as a kind of romantic chick-flick-type series. (i dont see it like that, though)

but anyways, i absolutely am infatuated with Chobits... anime and manga version... i think its a beautifully illustrated series with a great storyline and a great soundtrack and CLAMP never ceases to amaze me. :)

Chobits is one of the most amazing anime series you're ever likely to see. For the audience, it's common fair made interesting. But from a business view point, the female character Chii is a high seller.

How many girls would want to have Chii on a key ring? How many guys would buy wall scrolls? How many comics do you think will be sold?
Chii's cuteness makes her widely accessible to a massive market. If Chii were male, and Hideki were female, then Chobits would never have met with such a high rate of success. There is no way that the fan boy market would accept a CLAMP animation starring a male robot looking for their one and only.
Kinda says something for the lack of power that masculinity has in the real world, huh?

And how misogynistic can Chobits be? The power in this show is held entirely by all of the female characters. Hideki works like a slave to help Chii. The Land Lady is held in high esteem by both Hideki and his flatmate. The female teacher plays both boys for suckers and uses the flatmate as a toy to make herself feel better for a little while.
Even the female waitress, who is younger then Hideki and wants to learn from him, takes control of his mind every now and then.
The only time when a male character dominates over a female character is when Chii gets kidnapped. And even then, Chii stood up for herself at her most vulnerable moment and took down her male oppressor.
Please, tell me when men start dominating this piece. Tell me at what point women are degraded?
As far as I can see, this show promotes female empowerment and, eventually, mutual understanding between the sexes.

Anyhoo, it's great to see this forum alive. It's probably my favorite anime forum here besides dragonball.

And I'll have to agree with the major of people here. I've watched all of Chobits, and read a bit of the manga and didn't see any women being degraded.

Of course this anime is a fanboy fantasy,it's why we watch it,we don't want to see reality,we want to see a world where nice guys actually get dates and girls actually appreciate it.

But I do think that Chii is too...passive.She has no life of her own,she's just there to make Hideki happy,and while we all indulge in the idea of a cute girl who's only purpose in life is your own happiness,they should have given her something of her own(the books she buys would have been good if they weren't a plot device).

Also I quickly get bored of anime where girls become the hero's devoted lover at episode 1.

I think Chobits is to comedy/romance what Dragonball Z is to action.

I think that the anime wouldn't have worked if Chii has her own things. It sort of drives home the point that Hideki is everything in her life, and that she had nothing else.

And if you think about it, it kinda makes sense. She is a persocon, afterall. What could she possibly want? Extra artifacts would have complicated the series. And Chobits isn't an obviously complicated anime.

it's just there to entertain, not to be taken too seriously. I've just started watching this series though I think its okay. Chii, is cute as well as the little Persecom girl that alway blows her whistle when morning comes.
