well naturally, there will be spoilers for dvd 1 and anything in chobits manga vol. 1-4.

so anyways, i finally watched the first dvd of chobits the anime. all throughout, i was looking for differences from the manga and the anime, well first off, they dont actually show Hideki as a farmer in the manga, they say he's from hokkaido, but they dont show it in the manga, but hey, CLAMP wrote episode 1, so no problems there! also, the anime starts out differently, the manga story begins when Hideki is already in Tokyo and had been living there for at least a month, and in the manga, he's already been working at "My Pleasure" for some time. and Yumi is not the owner's daughter. one of the major differences is that Shinbo is living next door, i wonder how they'll handle that story when Miss Shimizu sleeps over at Hideki's (end of volume 1, and begining of vol. 2) when Shinbo's room is right next door!

anyhow, im pretty satisfied with the anime, very nice animation.

the anime rules over the manga, IMHO...... Thanks to the woders of fansubs (yay! huzzah!) I actually watched chobits near the end of last year... and its unlikely Australia will see its release for another 2-4 months at the miminum.......

You have messed up a little bit.... Shinbo's room IS right next door (you see him go there a bit later in the series).

Personally Chobits IS my favorite series (as the Chii wallscroll on my wall will attest), and when I read some of the manga after the I watched the series, I was actually dissapointed... it lacked a lot of the background and character-development that I had liked in the anime.

really? i dont recall ever seeing Shinbo living next door...or is it sometime after volume 4 of the manga? (ive only read vols. 1-4)

anyhow, as of now, i like the manga better, i tend to prefer manga over anime, especially CLAMP material, i just love CLAMP :D
the anime has better character development in the anime though

It's the little things that get to me at times.

Like when I watch something and see an error that should have never made it past the first re-write of the script and never to final DVD pressing. What I'm referring to, (and I already know this is very petty, but I was scrutinizing the dub to begin with)..
In EP 2 on the official DVD, English track, Hideki is being pounced on by Minoru's persocons and when Chii jumps on the pile he calles her "Chii", yet it wasn't until the end of that episode that he named her. The subtitles got it right. I guess it serves me right for wanting to like the dub. I can't bring myself to keep watching the dub because I feel it's tainted.

EDIT:
I just forced myself to watch episode 3 in english.. and Yumi says she's a "D-cup" in english and the sub has "E-cup".. I also remember E-cup from the fansub (that is something VERY hard to forget :) ) Now, here is a question before I scream too loudly.. Is there a difference between an American size E and a Japanese size E? Pure reference to size here.. no other commentaty necessary :)

i quite liked the dub, i felt it was pretty well done.
Not the best but a pretty good one (i didn't pick up on the chii mistake in ep 2)

As for the D cup/E cup it's possible (i know if i were to get an American shoe in the size i wear in the U.K. it would be different to the one i need*)

Having just done a quick search** (i'm bored so sue me;)) American sizes do indeed vary compared to Japanese and Europeon sizes for bra's.
Apparently a U.S. DD bra would be an E cup in Japan, so the translation isn't far off being right (it looks like DD = E implying both would be correct).
The chart i found doesn't list an E in U.S. and European Bra sizes and has U.S. F shown as "DDD (F)" :)

Any difference (having it as a D rather than DD) is likely to be either unintentional, or to avoid the average person thinking she had a much larger bust than she is meant to (i'd guess they assume that someone watching the Japanese track with subs would know about differences in the measurements in the same way they normally know about things like Sensei and Chan) :)

i can't beleive i just did this post, oh well i was bored :)

*I'm a 12UK, 12½ US and 46½ European

**Google, search terms "bra sizes american japanese"

Ha. Once again, fansubs show up the 'official' releases... which is why I prefer fansubs at all times.

I have to say I was very pleased with the fansub VCD set I got from E-bay for $10. Perfect picture except for the very first disc which had a few glitches. But the subs were really excellent and very professional looking.

Where do you guys buy your translated manga from? Its really expensive in the shops here ...

I don't know

in this case the diffference is almost certainly due to different measuring standards in Japan and the U.S.
It looks like the Subtrack may have used the Japanese measurement, and the English dub the american measurement (both would be techically correct as they refer to the same size, if you want to blame anyone blame the american measurements*) :)
It's akin to an American dub saying that something happened on 12/06/1778 (U.S. date convention) and the sub saying it happened 06/12/1778 (most of the rest of the world), if you don't have a reference as to which convention you are using it can be very confusing** (the Sub track would be closer to the original i expect, but both would be correct and the dub easier for the target audience to follow).

The only real mistake i can see is the Chii thing (and i'm not sure about that, i certaintly didn't notice it)

*This is a semi joke, The U.S. seem to measure everything differently to the U.K/Europe and Japan :)

**Quite why the U.S. uses mm/dd/yyyy as opposed to dd/mm/yyyy i don't know, but it causes no end of confusion when i'm talking to american friends who don't realise that i put the day then the month (i've taken to using the full date format 4h march etc rather than the qucik version to avoid confusion)

Actually, I found the subs in the official release to be just fine. It's the script re-writes for the dub that chap my ass :) Also, if I really like a series I have fansubs of all the way to the end, I will buy the offical ones.

dubs are always cock-ups, no matter what.

even the US gallon is different to the traditional UK gallon.... which is why I'm glad Australia uses the metric system.

Even when the japanese director tells his cast he wants them to be like the dub cast for a previous series of an anime ala Your Under Arrest?
