I guess everybody has this question, but no-one really takes it serious enough to openly ask it. Why would an obscure spirit have such an funky name as Boogiepop? When a friend of mine first heard the title and that it was a dark series, he sugested it could have something to do with the bogeyman. Might be posible. My first guess actually was it goes as something ironical, "boogy" and "poppy" going in the sense of funky, happy things. Something like "Life can be so nice" or the presense of Rie, those little lies which keep us alive... But then again, I'm not sure if the specifical character goes into that cathegory.
What's your guess? Maybe we'll never have an answer, but at least help me searching for it.

apparently the novels/manga explain this. 'boogiepop' is supposed to mean 'strange bubble'. i.e. 'boogie' (strange) / 'pop' (bubble). more specifically, it is the nickname/codename given to said entity by the Towa organization. but, you ask, wtf is 'strange bubble' supposed to mean?

well...

boogiepop is said to be the strange 'bubble that bursts' in our psyche in times of crisis, an intrinsic personality hidden within the psyche of humankind, able to rise to the fore in a split second of trauma. it is a result of our evolution, and has the power to free us from weakness or the past.

Oh, so you mean it's like a bubble in Toka's mind? Interesting. Thanks. Btw what language is that on, or is it once more the japaneese misunderstanding english?
