i have thought about this for a long time--- is tsukasa a girl or a boy... does he/she have a family, or is he/she an orphan. i seen much of the show, but i have no real clue about who tsukasa is... anyone know, or have any guesses?
if we were to tell you we'd probably spoil some of the story :)
tsukasa is a bit of an enigma for much of the series, and his/her background i think is sort of important in the way it influences his/her behaviour.
keep watching and mcuh will be revealed :)

Spoil it or don't spoil it? That is the question.

though i hate to say this... don't spoil it, it lookslike it will be a long wait for me, since cartoon network only shows one episode a week, and there's 26 episodes... oh well, hopefully i will still be alive by then! he he he

By the time you reach the end of this Series, you will care less what Tsukasa is... I was bored beyond hope...
If you watch closely, you'll see that the scenes keeps covering his face and suggests that he's a girl...
I want to know what you think Tsukasa is...

well, at first i thought tsukasa was a girl because in the first/second episode there was a view of a girl falling from her computer screen unconsious, but then i realized that it was the fallen crimson knight who was the girl, not tsukasa. i think s/he is a girl because tsukasa's personality is that of a confused girl, but then i'm not sure, because there are times where i think s/he is a guy because s/he's reactions around mimirou... i don't know, i'm confused, but it looks like i'm the only person who DOESN'T know who tsukasa is... oh well, only time will tell!

but i am not bored by the series at all, i like the mystery, but that's me... why were you bored by it kyrakasa?
this is not an action anime
this is more psychological and philosophical
some people are turned off from that sort of anime

Spoilers... Well I mean... There's not much to spoil... There's no excitement...
I'm not sure why I was bored to death... except that... I think Hack/sign would interest someone with less expectations from an anime... I've just watched too many good anime...
1. Yes this anime has zero action... Which is completely not like an Online RPG... I've played Online RPG's for 6 years and have Played Everquest since it came out... I've had much more action in 30 minutes of an online Guild Raid than in the entire Hack/sign series.
2. Evangelion was philosophical.... Hack/sign is not phylosophical... Hack/sign focuses on the idea that your mother would repeat to you over and over again...
"Honey~!... Stop watching TV before your bottom gets glued to the seat..."
"You better turn off the Video game before you lose your Eyesight..."
"Wait... Honey stop playing Online games or you'll go into a Coma?"
What's philosophical?? I mean the strangest thing is that anyone of my friends whose played an online RPG finds the philosophical question on whether you can fall into a coma as being something that should be covered in one or two episodes... Pulling it out into 26 episodes is overkill... :p
3. This anime is not psychological... Or nearly without psychology... You go through episodes where you see that Tsukasa is clearly depressed from his childhood... and that's it...
4. This anime repeats scenes over and over again... and the same music over and over again... No matter how good the music is... I can do without it once I hear it the 50th time around...
Can someone tell me how many times the scene with Tsukasa opening the first treasure chest was repeated? I counted atleast 20 times... I mean was that scene necessary to be repeated that many times?
5. The twilight key should have been covered in one or two episodes... Why did half of the series focus on a key that really brings next to no suspense...
For like 7 episodes the script must have been...
"I wonder what the twilight key is..."
"I wonder if I can find it..."
"I wonder what it can do..."
::Background Twilight key song::
"I wonder what the twilight key is..."
"I wonder if I can find it..."
"I wonder what it can do..."
::Background Twilight key song::
"I wonder what the twilight key is..."
"I wonder if I can find it..."
"I wonder what it can do..."
::Background Twilight key song::
Repeat.... Repeat...
6. I'm sorry but This anime lacks humour... Unlike Love hina... or Tenchi... or pokemon or something... There is next to no humour... Mimiru is the funniest person you'll get... and she's not all that funny...
7. Lacks Kawaiiness... Subaru, Mimiru, and Aura are cute... Yet Subaru lacks any close personal touch until the last few episodes... Mimiru seems kinda out of touch... and well she's only semi cute...
They just over did Aura... THERE IS A LIMIT TO HOW LONG YOU CAN STAND STARING AT A FLOATING LITTLE GIRL...
In half of the episodes there is FIVE WHOLE minutes of staring at Tsukasa either looking at Aura, sitting by Aura, standing by Aura...
At the end of the episodes, you get to watch Aura float in water... OOOOH,.... um... I'm tired of staring at that little girl.... :(
Five minutes of complete boredom...

P.s. I am frantically trying to find someone who can tell me why they like Hack/sign...
I have found no one who's able to explain to me why they like hack/sign yet...
Please feel free to tell me why you like hack/sign... :p

some people are turned off from that sort of anime Not me, but I began watching it expecting it to have more action. They picked an odd concept to play psychological and philosophical aspects in. Wasn't a bad idea I guess.

everything kyrakasa said
the way you describe the show in its repetitiveness is how you can describe just about any other show, i wont do it right now i dont feel like putting the effort.
the soundtrack is one of my two favorites in an anime, next to cowboy bebop.
it might not be philosophical, but it defenitely has psychological aspects to it. every character is extremely unique in the way they act in solitude, or how they interact with the different people from the game. the characters seem out of touch beause thats what they are meant to be like. they arent meant to be cliche anime characters, there real people that just spend alot of their time playing a game.
and if u didnt think sora's character was humurous.... then you're dead to me.... well, not really, but he's a legend.
i really dont care about the cuteness aspect. for me its like getting an extra order of fries, its sure is mighty nice that its there, but its not that major.
if you didnt like it, you didnt like it. i liked it better than evangelion, which i thought got extremely repetitive and took too long to get to its main point.
and for the record, everquest was the most boring game ive ever played in my life..... i just didnt like it i guess.

I agree... Yet it works its way to a climax...
Can you tell me WHAT is the main point of hack/sign.
and for the record, everquest was the most boring game ive ever played in my life..... i just didnt like it i guess.-Mrq-
I'll talk about EQ since you are familiar with it... Tell me what class and level you made it too?
Everquest isn't just a game... I classify it into atleast 3 levels...
Low lev game, Mid game, and High lev game...
Each stage is different and if you didn't make it to the high level game you have missed alot... :p
To a point Hack/sign reflects the low lev game of Everquest... You go out single or in groups of 3-5... You go kill mobs by the old hack and slash method...
Hack and slash method... Show up and just swing your sword. (No planning involved)
In the high level game Everquest involves having you join Huge Guilds of Real people where you have to communicate form friendships on the way from your low levels...
From that time on the Raids begin and the real fun starts.
Raids are huge gatherings of ussually around 20 and up to 80 people planning what they have to do to help each other defeat the next powerful Monster.
Gaining Experience and gearing up each of your Guildmates... or ally guilds...
You see It's becoming clear to me why I find Hack/sign so dissapointing...
Hack/sign makes online gaming look like a chat room.
They do nothing except say... I wonder who Tsukasa is...
I wonder if the computer can't log off...
I wonder why my sword won't work on the Big golden dumbell...
I wonder what is the twilight key...
I wonder WHY AM I FORCED TO WATCH A GIRL FLOATING for five minutes in each episode?
Sora was annoying to me... I hated his guts... That's why I don't think he's funny.
Please expand upon your thoughts about real humans playing an Massive Online Role Playing Game...
I'd like to know what psychological aspects did you find?
~_~
:liplick:
well.... seeing how im failing psychology  , i couldnt really give you any terms or nothin, but each character has something different about them. Tsukasa is obviously victimized due to a bad childhood so he's withdrawn, depressed, untrusting, many much like NGE.
BT is a very proud person who tries as much as possible to stay a level above the next person, whether it's acting like she doesn't care about being killed by sora, or by constantly going to both sides, floating tidbits of information around. she also has problems with involvement, and is most likely why she acts like the inbetweener. everything backfires on her in the 17th episode, and her weakness is exposed.
i dont see how anyone can hate sora. he's the most likeable character i've ever seen in an anime.
ok im done for now on the character sketch, its pretty late
the way you minimize .hack//sign i can do with any anime
"Shinji: I cant trust anyone, so i wont act at all on my free will, and be spineless the whole series
kill bunch of angels, each one getting closer bit by bit to the lilith.
shinji goes through hardcore depression
insturmentality
all of a sudden he's happy the end.
Why am i forced to watch shinji in the fetal position for half of EoE?"
And I liked Evangelion, but the way you vaguely described .hack//sign is the way im describing NGE, merely because it didn't appeal to you.
you didnt like .hack because it wasnt what you wanted it to be, that's all there is to it.
and finally. the point of .hack//sign is meant to be a prequel for the mass .hack project that is being released in video games, and manga, and other anime as we speak. only they took this series to a different level, where they concentrate less on the fact its a game, and they pay closer attention to the characters.
reality and illusion is a big theme in the story too, and im not getting into it this late.... ima have a brain meltdown..... 2 am......

Why am i forced to watch shinji in the fetal position for half of EoE?"
He wasn't in Fetal position for half of EOE...
And he wasn't in Fetal position for 5 minutes of every other episode... :p
Psychological... I see... You mean character developement...
That's not psychology...
Bt... Fashion model... got into drugs lol... BT sandwiches... I guess she's too fat to be a model now... :p
Sora... could be funny I guess... I'll have to get better subs... since the ones I have make him sound annoying.
But the psychology isn't really there... You just like the character development. and are attached to them...
Good I'm starting to see a reason to like Hack/sign...
Can you elaborate more on why you like Sora and mimiru... etc.
:)

:liplick:
i quite like hack//sign because i can identify with severall of the main characters (especially Subaru).
It is very much like some aspects of games like U.O. as well (a game i've played for 3 years and for 2 years ran a tavern in game), heck i still play it and i've met virtually every player type seen in hack//sign, from those who will always do whatever is needed to get their way/have their idea of fun (Sora), those who will go out of their way to help people (Subaru), those who are playing for fun and don't take anything too seriously (Mimiru), those who are trying to escape their "real" life worries (BT, Tsuarka, Bear) etc etc.
Oh and of course the "newbies" (that episode rang soo many bells, both from when i was a new player and my encouters with new players)
I think that is part of why i do like it, i can see the games reaching that sort of level before long.
It's really just a matter of time before the processing power is available, and LCD displays get a high enough resolution whilst being small and light enough to wear as a headset*.
At least those are some of my reasons for liking it :)
*the main problem with current VR/3D headsets is that they are bulky/uncomfortable and low res, but with LCD/TFT technology finally becoming more widespread and cheaper (nearly as many TFT displays were sold last year as CRT in the U.K. i beleive), the technology is finally getting the boost from lower production costs (due to increased output), and more and more research.
Which is leading to higher resolution panels, better response times (very important for gaming), and cheaper units with less "dead" pixels, I can pick up a half decent 15" display for about £200 now, last year £200 wouldn't have got me even the most basic new 15" model (and a very nice 17" panel is only about £350).

I see... Ultima online is a different type of game from Everquest. I've played Ultima online as well... You're goal is to max out 2 or 3 skills... and is different from Everquest...
The goal in Ultima online is much different and smaller groups of people are usually playing together... Goals are achieved with smaller groups... or usually Solo (by one person).
Hmm... Thank you for explaining why you like Hack/sign...
I think the major reason I disliked hack/sign was the horrible sub I watched...
I'm beginning to understand the appeal to others...
I'm just way... To familiar to Rpg's that I found everything dull...

aye EQ seems to be a different mindset to UO from what i can tell
One thing that has always put me off EQ was the "leveling" required, UO i can train up 7-14 skills (700 points total, GM at 100), and create totally strange character skill sets if i want :)
My barkeep has/had mace fighting *pulls club out from under bar* ;) (i thought it suited the idea of a barkeep)
Alchemy "are you sure you want to drink that sir? "
Animal Taming (the Tavern was named after one of the minor creatures in the game, so i often had a mascot in the bar)
as well as just enough magery etc to get by :)
My main character now is a Stealth Axewoman, it seemed like a great idea at the time, have a character weilding a huge axe sneak up on things and tap them on the shoulder :D
and aye most of the time things could be acheived by a small group or even a solo player.
Some of the best fun is to try totally suicidal attacks against high level critters (things like 20 or so people taking on the ancient wyrm with just daggers...).
Most of the time in UO once you reach a certain level (or get into the RP) it's a case of hanging round with the same small group of good friends in the same sort of area's.
Much like Mimiru and Bear do in hack//sign

Thank you~!
Nilrem... You've explained alot to me...
I believe that I've been more "turned off" to hack/sign by the way no one's been able to clearly state why they like Hack/sign...
You've done superbly well... I want to give you my thanks...
By the way... How long have you played UO...
"Aye" is a word used alot in UO... :p
~_~
:liplick:
P.s.
I would put myself into Subaru's character more than any other... I would stand by my thoughts... and fight for whats right... I'll hold my axe and not fight... I'll just stand there looking cute... :liplick: ... You can do the fighting...
aye, aye is used a lot in UO (i've got into the habit of using it in RL as well;))
I've been playing UO for something like 3 years now my characters are "38 months" for VET rewards (OSI added about 3 months to the account age for some reason), but i think i started in about May 2000, just after they added Trammel (i got a copy of "UO: The Second age" for a fiver when the "UO: Renassaince" box was released).

Hack/sign = MMORPG...
Everquest = MMORPG...
someone said that Hack/sign was psychological... I said it wasn't... And compared it to...
Evangelion = Psychological...
UO = MMORPG... An rpg that's less dependent on killing bigger and badder critters...
So I now decided that Hack/sign is an anime of the RPG's where you just hang out and talk....
I mean there are Rpg's out there for people that just make homes... and live a separate life where they cook "goblins" and eat them...

That's very true... I can remember running around EQ (back when half the people weren't so frickin' godly), slicing things up, running to my little spot in the game (some island out in the middle of nowhere), and living... sorta. Can't remember fully, since last time I played I was, like, 10
Can't speak for UO, though, since I've never played it.
Anyways, on to the point. .hack//SIGN isn't like many of those games named before. I figure it's more like Final Fantasy XI, and there's a main 'save the world' quest for people, but most of them just hang around and do nothing.
I would say that SIGN is more like the video games (after all, Mimiru, Bear, and Tsukasa are going to be in part two), but the differences in story and/or version of the game (like every good computer and online game, there are probably patches for it coming out all the time) make them a bit different.
That's all, I think.
BTW, like your new avatar, Kyrakasa. It's not a huge leap in .gif files, but it's pretty neat.

Yah... People play everquest like it's their jobs...
The uber guilds won't let someone under 18 join...
They simply say if you aren't 18 you probably won't have the commitment to come to all the raids...

Yes, my stepdad's dad (he's about 65 and he plays EQ) plays it like there's no tomorrow. He's part of a guild of high-level's (45+), but I can't remember it's name.
My question is this: I played EQ for about three months before I got tired of it. I was level 30, knew Norrath by heart, could tell you the location of almost every quest item on the first continent, and could cast many, many spells. It got so easy and so old that I didn't even like it anymore. How come it still holds people for years on end???
Oh, and wasn't this board supposed to be about Tsukasa's true self? Lol, how we've all gotten off-track.
someone said that Hack/sign was psychological... I said it wasn't...
i thought it was, i still think it is, but then again i said i was failing psychology, so who knows.
evercrack, i never liked it, but then i hear how people play days on end to get epic weapons, and then that time someone killed himself because he lost an item or something....
yea.... not my thing

Off track? Lol... You already know who Tsukasa is...
80% of all online Rpg players are male...
I finally know why so few women play... They all go into coma's~!
Oh ok... Off track again...
In Everquest an Uber guild is one that requires all members to be level 60.
If you have alts they can not join unless they are level 60.
All raids are mandatory.
Your life depends on killing the next mob.
If you cause a train.... You probably won't go to the next raid... :p
I find uberness to be overrated...

I find it overrated, too... I mean, Level 60??? In EQ, that days a very, VERY long time to do. After the first 15 or so levels, leveling goes about as fast as a snail... on concrete... in the middle of summer.
Lol...
----
ANYWAYS...
Well, my ex-gf has been playing games, and she isn't in a coma... yet.
Note to all female online RPGers... be careful!!!

i heard they were gonna increase the max to 70
thatd make things interesting

That's, what, 5 levels higher? Sorry, but it doesn't make EQ any newer. There's still a bunch of high levels. (It'd make everyone made, but they should reset the entire game.)
