Hmm, well I've only seen one episode of Niea_7 so all I can say that is similar is that they're both by Yoshitoshi Abe, they both feature crows, and they're both artistically different from most anime out there.

Niea_7 is more of an off-the-wall comedy while Haibane Renmei is more heartfelt drama and some "cute" moments.

I'd like to see more Niea_7. I'm getting more and more impressed with Abe's work now.

Just like after the first few eps of Haibane, Niea_7 begins to focus on an unexpected and far richer story thread. Make no mistake here, Neia_7 is primarily about Mayuko, about her aspirations & anxieties - Neia is mainly there to facilitate the viewer's discovery of them in much the same way that Rakka exposes Reki's storyline for the viewer in Haibane Renmei (albeit in a far more raucous manner, in Neia's case :D .

Oops, I've gone all incomprehensible & rambling  .

All I had meant to post was that while on the surface, Neia_7 appears to be a simple comedy (esp in the first few eps), there's a lot more going on than meets the eye.

Oh yeah, similarities. Hmm, lets see .... there's the inner monologue of Rakka & Mayuko that explains a lot of whats going on ( I think Mayuko's is when she's writing a diary or something, but I haven't watched it in a while :: note to self - rewatch Neia_7 :: ).

Then there's the same approach to the series' whereby not everything gets explained within the first ten minutes, & :: shock horror :: you have to actually interpret events & make your own mind up. ( which doesn't quite work at the end of Neia_7 IMHO, & just feels like a blatant cop-out by the writers ).

Hmmm... So you're saying something does happen, and there's more of a storyline?

I watched the first dvd and can't decide if I want to go on with it. On the one hand, I really like some of the characters and the set-up. I can feel that a good story's coming, and I'm interested. On the other hand, I don't know if I can stand any more episodes of NieA and Karna screaming at each other at the top of their lungs. We get the point, they don't like each other. Stop with the screaming, already.

And no matter if they're a cute alien, a person running around for an entire half-hour episode whining about nothing but food is not "funny". I wouldn't mind if NieA whined occasionally, but every single time she opens her mouth, it's about food. But... I suppose that's how her character is supposed to be: a freeloader.

At least the BGM was good.

[Edit:] Oops, I just realized how off-topic this post is. Pardon the irrelevent rambling.

I know what you mean - Niea does get mighty irritating. I guess that's so you can identify with Mayuko when she blows her lid and starts raging at her. Like I say, as the series progresses, it starts focusing more on Mayuko, so thankfully Niea gets a lot less airtime.

Edit : just thought of another similarity in that both series represent the quite often monotonous ordinary life continuing alongside extraordinary situations via the plot device of repeting particular scenes. So you get to see Lain walk the same route to school every day, and Mayuko doing her paper round.
