i thought it was the third? i know theres Angelic Layer and something Senki which was the first they made

Angelic Layer was based on the CLAMP manga, I wonder how similar it is to it....

I'm talking about the production of the anime, Evangelion is an original Gainax production and Kare Kano and Maharomatic are not since they were based on mangas.

Like how RahXephon and Wolf's Rain are original Studio Bones productions whilst Angelic Layer (Clamp), Cowboy Bebop Movie (Sunrise) and the Escaflowne Movie (Sunrise) are not.

So you would agree that the Evangelion project is an original by Gainax...

And The RahXephon project is an original by Bones?

In terms of a production they are originals.

In terms of story elements no animes are highly original (ones people consider original are more likely puttinga fresh spin on an old idea), like i said before.

There's nothing new under the sun, it's not what you do but how it's done.

Evangelion & RahXephon (well every mecha anime after it) owe alot to Mobile Suit Gundam (and many other animes) but in terms of how good the show is Eva and Rah are far superior to MSG. Not saying the MSG is crap (It is after all the most respected work accodring to a poll of anime creators in newtype) I just didn't like it compared to other gundam titles (Turn A Gundam, 08TH MS Team, Zeta and SEED for starters) let alone animes.

Don't confuse original production with original story elements, sorry if you misintepreted my post.
