Remastered OVAs

There was a recent Magic Knight Rayearth (Remastered) release of the OVAs. Is this a carry on of the story from the TV series, or a retelling?
Can I watch these OVAs without watching the TV series first or will it be confusing?

The ova is "loosely" based on the anime BUT is a completely different universe and thus should not spoil anything in the series...

I haven't seen it though.
