first of all...you have to play all of the games to get through the whole story.

second....did you watch all of the show?

why does it suck? because, frankly...you can't understand anything past violence. the show makes plenty of sense. try explaining what you don't understand.

i watched the anime when it first came out and enjoyed it alot, not everything made sense but i believe it was supposed to be that way. Thats why we have the manga, other series, and games.

I am currently playing the first hack game and there are a decent amount of connections between the series and game to form some sort of understanding.

Here's what i think is happening, someone please correct me, i saw the anime over a year ago and i am probably getting things confused.
The games take place after the anime. People are having comma's from playing in the "world" this happens within the first few sequences within the game. This is caused by a virus or something? Aura is something left by the programmer of the "World" I think she is the core of it and she is being chased after by the virus which i think is called Morganna in order to destroy everything?

If anyone can confirm or add to these theories of mine please do.

Spoilers

Aura and Morganna??? are both AI programs that appear to have been left by the original programmer, i'd guess going by comments his reflection/message/image made in that castle that Morganna was some kind of mistake and Aura was his intended program.

The coma's certainly appear to be caused by Morganna or similar entities (no idea how many there are - we see 2, but given the size of the world there could be dozens).
The impression i got was that Aura was in some ways his "child" (i can't remember the exact wording he uses), i'm not sure if it was meant in the manner of it being based on a real child (possibly dead?) or in the manner that a number of people see their lifes work almost as a child if they have put off having a family to get their work done.

My guess is that some of the AI's (if indeed there are more than 2) are using human personalities to do important tasks for them in the same way we use programs to keep an eye on stocks etc and alert us when certain things happen. Tsuka* is being used to keep an eye on Aura, and towards the end of the series Sora is used to try and prevent the gang from succeeding at their attempt to rescue Tsusarka (and seems to take T's place).

Which begs the question - is the funny cat person another player that has been caught up for a longer period of time, it certainly has some free will but not much (i could imagine T becoming like it after a prolonged period of time and many "deaths").

For those of you who have read Tad Williams "Otherworld" it seems to be a similar thing (or even closer to "The Wyrm" by Mark Fabi)

Apologies for the terrible spelling and grammer, it's 9:45am here and i've been up all night playing Breath of Fire 4 on the PC :)

In order for the games to make a little more sense, you could watch the twelve episode series .hack//DUSK.

I just got done with mutation about a week ago. In the beginning it may get repetitive, but it get a whole lot better.

Just watch more of it. It slowly unfolds, but if you're an action fan like me you'll probably agree hack's too talky.
