Does this mean that the Gowa family brought their own city? I know that they are rich, but to buy your own city is a bit much. Just how rich and powerful are they? Would they be the richest family in the world?

That's the idea, I imagine. They are so rich and influential that they have a city named after them and generally under their influence and pseudo-control.

By the way, your avatar is very funny, but also very very disturbing... There's something about Ronald McDonald and the words "I'll be watching you..." that is so very nightmarish...
