Animeboards.com vB3 RC2 upgrade

Animeboards.com upgraded to the latest vBulletin v3 RC2 forum software. I'd like to thank Nairohe (http://animeboards.com/member.php?u=375) for creating the newly revised AB mascot - doesn't she look cute? :kawaii: Expect to see the mascot around more in the future :)

There's bound to be some bugs and issues with the updated software so please reply to this thread with questions or bug reports. The forum FAQ at http://animeboards.com/faq.php? also has alot of info regarding the new features etc.

Some of the newer features by example... multiple attachments per post. There's alot of popup, javascript drop down menus across the forums. If you have javascript disabled in your browser, you will get an alternate template to view for the navigation, menus etc.

Since both Eva2000.com and Bubblegumcrisis2040.com are tied into Animeboards.com's database for displaying forum specific threads on those sites, I also had to rewrite and redo the coding so that threads are continued to be displayed on the respective site's forum pages. If you come across any errors on these 2 sites to do with forum threads, please let me know.

I haven't been able to figure out the mod_rewrite syntax/code needed for use with vB3 as yet, so if you see such likes in your older posts, you can get to them by retyping the url as

Also i have pruned/deleted

1. over 1,700 inactive user accounts on the forum from the 'awaiting email confirmation group' (those who registered but never activated their accounts by checking their email for activation link AND have 0 posts).

2. approx 2,001 inactive user accounts for 'registered' group (those who registered, have less than 1 posts and haven't logged in for over 365 days.

Since i only deleted members will less than 1 = 0 posts, no posts were lost. However, vB3 does show less posts/threads totals on the front page, due to private forum or archived threads no longer being counted towards the displayed totals.

3. User CP http://animeboards.com/usercp.php? - lots of stuff including availability to manage all your attachments!

4. Look at the bottom of threads for the - Similar thread listing :)

6. Subforum forums on front page and forums, listed as links to easy access and less clutter i.e. Anime Series http://animeboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=63 - or we could go back to the old way but the front page or anime listing will get more cluttered as we add new anime forums

7. All the up and down arrow icons represent collapsable menus/features

8. Subscribing to forums or threads now have more options - http://animeboards.com/subscription.php?do=viewsubscription . You can either have no email notification - so you can go to view subscriptions and view updates, or instant email, daily or weekly digest email options.

9. Multiple usergroups - so members can belong to more than one usergroup/titles etc. Ideal for RPG forums where members may want different titles for RPGs :)

Please let me know what you think of the forum organisation and layout. I'm not sure the current show all subforums as links will actually work, as you can't see which forums have new posts in them :o

I'm still sort of floating around and seeing what's what, as there's a whole bunch of features that sort of clutter things up a bit. So far as the layout goes, how you've got it right this second with some of the forums collapsed and some not seems to be alright for now. I suppose only time is going to tell whether or not it's any better - everything's still got that new forum smell.

So far as bugs go, I haven't really found any. Though I keep having to re-log in every new thread or reply I make, though that's probably a cookie thing.

Also, given that I have a huge sig that was put in before the upgrade, it displays the whole thing. I take it that other members are probably going to have this to, so it might be a problem. That and the 250 characters count also includes formatting, which makes the bunch of RPG urls I had in there go over the limit.... so I don't know what to do there, heh.

I'll let you know if I stumble across anything more.

heh, Pen2 trust me there's so many features not even I know what all of them do :o The multiple usergroups is one of those features :heh: Guess we can test this feature out on a dummy RPG forum later on :D

Ah yes cookie issues, best to log out of forums, then close all browser windows. Then go to windows -> cookie folder where ever that is on your pc and delete all instances of cookie files which have

It's me again.

1) How does one upload a custom avatar. Under User Control Panel >> Edit Avatar I don't see that option.

2) When on the attachments page, does deleting anything from that list actually delete the attachment or just the record of it on your User CP?

3) If I update my e-mail, do you have to personally verify it. I recall people have had problems changing e-mails then not being able to post even after the confirmation e-mail was sent to the new address.

4) What do the + and * after the user names mean?

yup changing email needs you to verify the new email, check the new email address for reactivation link

There seems to be a bug in the software preventing people from updating or changing their email addresses to a valid new email address - you get email is banned messages even though your email is valid and not on the ban list. Hang in tight while I report this bug to the vB guys

Attachments have been moved out of the MySQL database, into the server's file system as regular files. You won't see anything different, just fast loading files and a smaller database size. As of now on the forums there are

All the new features are pretty nice, but I would highly suggest you deactivate the display modes. They are doomed to cause a whole lot of confusion. At least, they are doomed to confuse me.

Related to here, but also a general vB3 question. I take it there's no way to have it that the buddy list appears in the UserCP on the left, as in vB2? I always found it handy to just have it there at a glance, rather than opening it in a new window.

yeah i'm use to the old method but forcing yourself to use quick links drop down menu each day makes it easier to adjust to :)

I used to be able to file away "Sent Items" into individual folders, but when in my "Sent Items" box the dropdown menu at the bottom does not have the "Move to folder..." option. Can that be changed?

I prefer to use Hybrid, as I do on AnimeOnDVD (although their implementation suffered with *their* software upgrade).

However, vB's implementation has quirks of its own which I'm not sure I'm ready to deal with just yet. e.g. Selecting a post from the thread tree will display different numbers of posts depending how deep in the hierarchy the selected post appears. So if you select a post at a leaf node, you don't see any other posts. I suppose it's a tradeoff - after all, you don't get this granularity at AnimeOnDVD. You either see 1 post, or the whole thread - which gets ugly for big threads. Also, there seems to be a default tree display depth of 5, where it really should be unlimited.

The topic review for a reply seems unnecessarily deep. Or maybe it cuts off at the user-selected posts per page setting :heh:

(BTW I'm not asking for any of this to be changed; I can live with any weird system)
