Seeing as this forum is somewhat dead at the moment, I thought I might inject a bit of life into it, by voicing my thoughts on Funimations efforts in dubbing this wonderful series.
To begin with, I was a bit skeptical at first but thankfully, such thoughts didn't last too long. Funimation didn't do a good job, they did a FANTASTIC one.
And now, a character by character break down:
THE GOOD:
Tohru Honda
Cute, compassionate and a complete airhead? That's what we wanted and that's what we got! Laura Bailey does a supurb job and really grasps on what makes Tohru fascinating and builds upon it.
Shigure Sohma
My pick out of all the dub voices is Shigure. He sounds exactly like the debanoir yet amusingly moronic writer we expect him to be. I loved him when I first saw FB and I still love him now.
Yuki Sohma
In a series loaded with bishies, Yuki has to be the most bishie of the lot. However, i like this dub voice the best when he is arguing with the other members of the Sohma clan. Plus, it's good to hear Yuki have a more masculine voice compared the the original.
Arisa Uotani
Tough chick indeed. I really liked her voice - so I doubt anymore needs to be said ;)
Saki Hanajima
She sounds exactly like the scary goth girl (??) we expect her to be. Casting perfection ;)
Hatsuhara Sohma
I didn't think much of Haru in the original sub, but I found myself liking his english VA.
Ayame Sohma
Can someone PLEASE give that man an ACADEMY AWARD?!?! He's fantastic!
Although Ayame got on my nerves ib the sub, this English vocie has made my opinions do a complete 180. The Ayame here sounds so pompus it makes the absurd situations he gets into even more ridiculous. My second fav English voice!
Kisa Sohma
Kisa is a really frial and gentle character and I felt that the VA here really encapsulated her nature really well.
Hiro Sohma
Alongside Shigure, Hiro is the character I feel the strongest connection with. Ironically, this came when I got him a character test - BEFORE I actually saw him on screen.
In English however, he's provoked a better reaction out of me in that he seems even more obnoxious. :lol:
Ritsu Sohma
This guy keeps cracking me up every time I see him. Ritsu is a great opportunity for some overacting and the VA really nailed the character with his performance. ;)
THE NOT QUITE SO BAD (but not too good either)
Kyo Sohma
Considering Kyo is a very aggressive character, he works best when he is shouting. And whilst it works well here, it also falters: When Kyo is in one of his serious moments, the voice doesn't seem to work as well. Oh well.
Kagura Sohma
Whilst the voice and the attitude is spot on, the problem I have is that she whispers a fair bit - thus making the dialogue somewhat inaudible. Still, it is fun to see the VA really getting into the swing of things when Kagura's mood continually changes.
Hatori Sohma
I know Hatori has had a lot of heartbreak in his time and he is a very serious character but why does he sound so uninterested?
THE UGLY
Momiji Sohma
Okay, so maybe Momiji looks really girlly but the problem is he/she sounds so BLAND!!!! This is frustrating considering Momiji is such an energetic character.
Well that's it from me - What do the rest of you think?
