I forget which episode, i think its something like 6 or 7. Its the one where they have to escort the bridge guy back to his homeland. When Naruto gets poisoned, both sasuke and sensei say "Mr. Scardy Cat" and "You're just gonna slow us down", respectively. Did they really say that to him, or was that the poison speaking? And if they did, when did sasuke start to verbally denounce naruto? I just remember him ignoring naruto, not actually fighting back.

well the whole series revolves around them being rivals...
and kakashi said that they would have to take naruto back to the village to cure the poisoning slowing him down...
but dont worry naruto gets his revenge later in the series... ;)

well, where did the hate arise? It really doesn't make much sense. Sasuke never gave any hint that he would drop so low as to strike naruto with words, and i'm trying to piece it togther. i'm probably analyzing it too much

I'm assuming that you guys haven't kept up with the latest manga chapters as of late? Anyways, I don't think it's really a hate relationship, more like that they have mutual respect for one another. They both acknowledge each other's power and the fact that Naruto rose to even greater lenghts than Sasuke could even imaging made him realize that Naruto is a ninja to be respected. It seems like they are rivals at the beginning, but there's more hanging in the balance as the story carries on.

i thought as much. i'm only through episode 10 if that explains the lack of knowledge. Does the girl get any better? i'm too lazy to try and find her name.

You mean Sakura....well, she doesn't get any better but she is about to undergo "special training" by Tsunade. Don't worry if you don't know whom she is, you'll find out much later. Sakura is more of the weak link of the trio in terms of raw power, but her knowledge and medical skills as a ninja make her an asset on the battlefield. Most people aren't taking her seriously as she hadn't display any threating skills, but she'll definately be a force to reackon with once she's done her training with Tsunade.

i thought as much. and it seems that she is more valueble in the beginning just because she knows so much about chakra.

eh heh heh, should you really be saying all that stuff about tsunade and sakura to someone who's just starting the series, i mean even the people who only watch the anime wouldn't know that yet ahhhh well i guess it's fine . Anyway splintr you'll eventually relize that you just had Sasuke pegged as the wrong sort of guy, and probably Naruto too , they're rivals so it's natural for the name calling.

i've seen thorugh 20 now. Their rivally makes more sence now. It just sorta appeared out of nowhere in the beginning. Although sasuke couldn't care less about sakura :heh:

WOW ace, good job in spoiling. you do know that the anime hasnt even covered that yet? (i know it though), you're first post, he should find that out for himself as they go into detail about sasuke and naruto's relationship later on.

and splintr, no offense, but just keep watching, ask questions later. theres 90 episodes ahead of you, dont you think they'll give answers somewhere between that?

aright, did the series ever hint that naruto and sasuke were the best of friends? nope. Do you reember the time when Naruto confronted Sasuke about being the most popular guy with girls in the academy (where they accidentally kiss)? On top of that, sasuke (at the beginning) is calm and quiet while Naruto is wild and crazy, which annoys Sasuke. Finally, sasuke is the number one rookie while Naruto has the lowest grades. Those are the start of their rivalry, all that stuff ACE2001 put were true as well, except they go into detail much much much much later (in truth, you're not supposed to know that yet, as of ep 20, sasuke is much stronger than Naruto. their mutual respect shows obvious much later in the series as ace points out when Naruto actually gets stronger and stronger). So yea, I'd recommend watching arc by arc (better yet up to 109) until you ask questions. You're just asking to be spoiled (which may or may not be a good thing, depending if you liked to be spoiled or not).

later in the episodes if u read the manga up 2 as far as i am [up to chapter 243.. heh ;)] they actually show flashbacks to when they were younger and showed a special bond they had with each other altho they never actually confronted each other at the time, so that explains their lil friendship part. the rivalry i beleive only began as a one sided view from naruto who envied sasuke for his mainly his popularity. But i think they're tension and friendship really built up in the bridge story where they competed at EVERYTHING and im mean it. whether it b climbing trees or eating they were insane...quite entertaining ;)
anyways..i hope i was helpful......actually i hope ppl actually get to read this.... :sweatdrop :sweatdrop

well in the episode where naruto and sasuke are trapped in the ice crystal mirrors and sasuke just before he goes into his death state tells naruto he is sorry about being mean to him.

Are we talking dubbed or subtitled here? I don't recall that being in the subtitles version - its probably just wussy stuff they threw in as part of "Americanising" it. IIRC, Sasuke tells him he doesn't know why he protected Naruto like that - his body just moved on his own. I suspect he considers Naruto a friend even if he doesn't want to admit it.

When he insults Naruto earlier, its because he doesn't consider Naruto to be a worthwhile teammate since he shows poor skill as a ninja, is loud and annoying and basically just froze during the entire fight. Sasuke holds him in contempt at that point. Naruto gets his respect by working out the winning tactic against Zabuza and by training as hard as Sasuke later on.
