Can Someone Explain The Rules To Me?

I've seen a fair number of episodes before, but always wondered what the rules are - I've seen some long card fights, but it seems like they introduce rules and moves as the episodes go by - is there some sort of canonical body of rules?

Deplete your rivals life points by attacking it with monsters, and you can defend attacks with monsters .., that's the basic jist of it.

It should be pointed out Yugi and his friends do a lot of things that aren't in the rules of the game.
