View Full Version : OVA's

just borrowed another RRK video - OVA 2 or the Tomoe story. drat! cant believe that they have only one OVA! the good thing is (i just discovered this today) i can actually request the anime w/c i wanna see (just dont know when it'll be released)

anyway, about the OVA's...

it is actually the first RRK OVA ive seen (and yes, it is subbed in english) - and this is what i can say... it is heavy - from biginning to end (although not like EoE) very serious stuff - animation is not like what ive been used to but it definitely fits into the film (that's my opinion though)

so are all the OVA's animation the same? also, how many OVA's are there?

The animation and tone of the kenshin OVA is much more dark and bloody, but I think it suits the material well, after all, it was a revolutionary time and kenshin was the battousai. If you were expecting something like the TV series, I suppose you would have been quite shocked though.

There's only one Kenshin OVA so far, with 4 parts to it. Vague rumours of a second OVA series, especially given the sucess of the first one, the fact that the Revenge arc from the manga still hasn't been animated and also the fact that there are a lot of posters/pictures of an adult anime-style Enishi knocking around the place even though adult Enishi has never appeared in anything except for the manga.

Not all OVA animation is a dark as the kenshin OVA, but basically what you have to remember is that this is stuff produced straight for the video market...means that the budget they have for animation is usually bigger so it's better quality than what they do for TV...also they don't have the restrictions that TV places upon the depiction of certain things (the sheer amount of blood and violence that's in the Kenshin OVAs could only be shown on video). With an OVA they may choose to stick with the storyline/history established by the TV series (eg Weib Kreuz, Ranma 1/2) or they may take a completely different interpretation/story using the same characters (eg El Hazard, Tenchi Muyo).

Personally i liked the Hitokiri Baitousai of Kenshin, when i watched the tv series, i always wanted Kenshin to fight serious and whenever the hitokiri resurfacing at times of need, the fights would always be spectacular.

I liked the OVA causes it was mostly all Battousai. Other than that the animation quality of the OVA was to me much better than the series.

hey Draco, nice name - i would've used that if i hadnt had ryezen! :D

well, ive only seen one ova and that is the Tomoe story, but the thing i dont like here is, compared to the hitoriki shown in the series, this one is relatively weak (though that's based on watching only 1 ova)

the hitoriki w/c gets me going is when he has the glowing hair and the eyes - those eyes! plus he is more agressive as a hitoriki in the series... :)

Tamachan
08-08-00, 10:49 AM
If anything, I would have said that the OVAs are far more violent than the series. Glowing eyes/hair aren't really appropriate for the style of the OVA, which is more realistic...Kenshin expresses his deadly nature in more subtle ways.

ryezen
08-08-00, 12:00 PM
well, i have to agree w/ the fact that the OVA's are far more violent than the series - there's no doubt about that!

what i was saying was, in the series, kenshin is more powerful as a hitoriki than he was in the OVA i saw. and that is why i really loved the way he looked when he would turn hitoriki.

Kenshin in the OVA series was only 15 yrs.old(i think) that's why in the T.V series he looks more deadly when he turns Battousai coz his a lot older.

btw ryezen, was the whole t.v series shown there in the phils.? coz when i was there ive only seen till the 46th episode.

ryezen
08-08-00, 12:26 PM
right you are Bleed! that was why i liked him in the series - he's a lot stronger, more experienced, and thus more deadly!

im not sure, the last time i checked the local channel, they were still at the Shougo saga. i saw the series subbed and dubbed in english w/c i borrowed from this local video shop

btw Bleed, r u Filipino too?

tell me, in the tv series, did they ever mention tomoe?
or is that just in the ova.

***SPOILER***
In the tv series, one or two episode after shishio dies, kenshin visits a grave in kyoto could that have been tomoe?

tekblade
09-08-00, 04:46 PM
well to me i dont realy know cause if you remember in the ova series he burns the home he lived in with tomoe inside. it was his way of leaving his memories. maybe that grave is hers so that it reminds him of her i guess.

Draco
09-08-00, 07:52 PM
hmmm... in the ova is burns down the house but in series she is buried, some kinda plot mix up there

Bleed
09-08-00, 08:06 PM
kenshin burned the house in the OVA series with tomoe inside, maybe he visited tomoe's grave and the graves of the three sisters who sacrificed there lives in order for shinta(aka kenshin) to live.

ryezen
09-08-00, 11:12 PM
oh look, another Filipino residing in the US! :)

but anyway, i dont think kenshin burned tomoe - just the house. at the end of the Shishio (was that it?) saga, kenshin visits a grave - one grave in an edo cemetery. and if i remember correctly, he mentions the name tomoe

Draco
10-08-00, 12:14 AM
i don't think kenshin say tomoe in the tv series, correct me if i'm wrong, he just puts his hand on his x shaped scar while he looks at the grave in kyoto

I'm reading the RK manga in the revenge arc right now. And there's a whole lot of it that's just a flashback to the Tomoe story and stuff. It's what the OVAs were based on (I think, correct me if im wrong).

well in the Revenge Arc, Kenshin asked Misao to get Tomoe's diary so enishi would undestand that tomoe didn't die in vain. Aoshi and Misao arrived with the diary, but kenshin and enishi has started fighting, so kenshin gave the diary to enishi for him to read it, and after he read it, he surrendered....

I think if you're a first-time Kenshin watcher you should start with the OVA series.

It gets you into the feel of Kenshin. Then start watching the series. You'll get surprised by the lack of blood and violence but it is replaced with entertainment value. The series is more entertaining to watch than the OVA series, but I personally like the OVA's better.

The movie should be seen after you have seen about 60 or so episodes and you know all the characters in Kenshin.

Rurouni Kenshin is actually the second best Anime I have ever seen... Next to Evangelion.

If you haven't seen it, get the OVA's and WATCH IT!!

I was under the impression that he burned the house and buried everyone that he killed and that was all of the crosses, have to wait 2 or 3 weeks for more answers.
