Database server upgrades - downtime scheduled

Our gracious hosts Disboards.com (read http://animeboards.com/showthread.php?t=56124) are planning to upgrade the database server which powers both Animeboards.com and their own forums at Disboards.com soon.

As members and visitors have noticed, the 'server is busy' messages on AB, these a due to the servers being overloaded due to 2 large vB forums on the servers.

There's my forums, Animeboards.com which even now it it's slow activity receive 200+ users online (mainly guests) and 8,000+ visitors/day still. And there's our hosts' forums Disboards.com, which is nearly 10x times larger than AB, with over 8.3 million posts, 77k members and up to 1,800+ users online at a time.

Currently, we're being powered by 2x dual cpu servers by Disboards.com.

A web server:
Dual P4 3.0Ghz Xeon
3GB ram
SCSI disks

A database server:
Dual P4 2.8Ghz Xeon
3GB ram
10,000 rpm SCSI disks raid 10

The plan is to upgrade the database server to:

New database server:
Dual P4 3.6Ghz Xeon
8GB DDR400 Registered ECC ram :eek:
15,000 rpm SCSI disks raid 01

I'll be helping with setting up and tweaking the new database server to ensure everything is running fine.

So folks expect some downtime in the days or weeks to come for the server upgrade. Hopefully this will eliminate the server busy messages :D

Well new database server has been setup all I need to do is a few tests and then move Animeboards.com's forum database to the new server :)

Well Animeboards.com's forum database has been moved to the new database server. You should notice the difference in speed but if you have any problems please let me know in the Contact Admin forum here http://animeboards.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&f=5

Why did you want to do that? Is it just to make the speed go faster or is it also for something else?

I'm still geting the "server Busy" messages......More often than before :rolleyes:

yes you will temporarily get some server busy messages these are coming from the web server not database server as Disboards.com are doing their forum database back up and restore on the new server right now and that would place a bit more load as the single web server as that web server is servicing both old and new database servers right as this moment.

Once Disboards.com moves completely to new database server, then the loads will settle down.

Reason for this is the old database server no longer can handle the loads of the 2 forums particularly Disboards.com which grew from 2-3million posts when the old database server came online to 8.3+ million posts right now.

There was and will be momentary downtime today and for next few days while out hosts Disboards.com move their database to the new mysql database server.

Hopefully, everything will be back to normal very soon :)
