Ok, stupid question: Is this series worth watching?

Must ask. I like medieval series ESPECIALLY REcord of Lodoss War but I am not too sure of this one. Is it a soap? Or a reall Anime w/ some real meat - friends sacrificing for friends, good battle scenes, strong story line, and strong character development. PLus really good personalities yoiu love to hate and love.
