"full" metal

how come it's called full metal alchemist if the guy only has a metal leg and arm? is his bro suposed to be the main character or something?... :eek:

I don't think they ever give an exact reason. It could be because his arm and leg are fully made out of metal or it could be a reference to his giving his brother "life" in the armour. Each alchemists is given a name that is supposed to match their skills - for Edward they decided on Full Metal.

I think the Full Metal thing might be a describing word or something. When I first heard of Full Metal Alchemist I though it was a sequel to Full Metal Panic. But then I read that it had nothing to do with each other. So maybe it mean "Tough" or "Strong" or something like that.

As I said before, each State Alchemist is given a title that matches up with their specialities. Roy Mustang for example is the flame alchemist because he specialises in fire alchemy. Edward is given the title of Full Metal Alchemist when he joins - they never say exactly why but between his automail limbs and Alphonse there are plenty of reasons.

I belive it also represents the word "fool" instead of full. if you think about it the whole series revovles around edwards foolish mistake.

that's right, he makes a lot of mistakes, but at least he learns from them.

It's a nickname. Just like how most people nicknamed "Tiger" don't turn into a giant cat by the light of the full moon, "Full Metal" is simply meant to describe an aspect of Edward Elric without sounding retarded, they could have called him "Partially Metallic Alchemist" but it doesn't have the same ring you know?
