Full Metal Panic is actually, despite it's many flaws, is the best mech anime I've seen. Most of the mech animes I've seen that either have mechs or are focused on mechs, don't really make the show worth watching the moment when the giant robots finally come to kick the crap out of each other.
Gundam for example was always too serious for me. Everyone was so uptight and so serious, it was hard to enjoy the simplistic child like enjoyment of watching giant robots beat each other up. FMP actually did something right and made colorful and likeable characters that worked with the mech action.
Unfortunately this is also where FMP falls and badly. I think the action and character dev. were not well balanced and we often got bad, or stupid date scenarios for the show's supposed romantic couple (Koname and Sasuke) instead of robots.
Normally I love anime couples, but this is the main reason I was sorrowly disappointed with Full Metal Panic and had they got this right, this would have been the best mech anime i've seen. The problem is the love is too stiff and buried too deeply under conflicting character personalities and designs.
Koname is too hard on Sasuke and doesn't warm up or show much of any romantic interest until towards the end. And Sasuke's military attitude is amusing but again, if he doesn't lighten up or "evolve" as the show progresses, he's not fun to watch.
Plus all the other chars like the girl with the glasses, Melissa Mao, and Telessa are not thoroughly developed. We get enough of their identites to see what they are "supposed" to be like but we go no deeper. So in closing, it's a step up from any mech anime I've seen, but that doesn't say a whole lot.
What do you guys think, agree, disagree?
