Insane as this hypothesis may sound, a live action series of Slayers in far from impossible. In fact, it can even become a popular one with a cult following (at least in my humbe opinion) if the following requirements are met:
Production company: Due to the caucasian nature of the main leads and the world around them, having an American (or Australian, since Fox has a foothold in Sydney)production team would be a more natural choice for the adaption. Either Fox (Simpsons, X Files) or Paramount (Young Indiana Jones, Star Trek Phenomenon) would be an optimal choice.
The All Important Cast:
Lina Inverse: It would Be A Tie Between either Anna Paquin or Natalie Portman. Anna is unbearably cute and has a magnetic charisma about her (just like Lina). Natalie is more womanly and her charm stems from a dignified sophisticated wit. Both are beautiful yet childlike enough to qualify. Some people I know suggested Christina Ricci; but although Lina is hot tempered, she is kind hearted and not a mean spirited bitch like Ricci.
Gourry Gabriev: Devon Sawa is has wonderful comedic command over his body, which would facilitate Gourry's clumsyness. You might Say Matt Damon is too smart, but it takes a certain amount of intelligence to portray an idiot who is likable.
Amelia Wil Telsa Sailune: Anna Paquin would do FINE, as she is adorable, beautiful, energetic, and high spirited enough to be the Princess of Justice. If not, Mara Wilson (when she is old enough) is also suitable.
Zelgadis Greywolf: Ahem. The only one who is even remotely suitable is the Martial Arts legend Ray Park (of Darth Maul and Toad fame). For one, he is more than used to working with prosthetic makeup. Also, Zelgadis' way of fighting is very mobile and acrobatic, and only Ray Park's grace and agility can do him justice.
Xellos: Hmm, again a difficult choice. Ben Affleck has the right attitude, and a cruel pair of eyes to match. But (surprise surprise) it really should go to rapping funnyman EMINEM, who possesses the exact cheerfully vicious sense of wit that Xellos possesses.
Martina: Kirsten Dunst in a hyperactive and perpetually exasperated mood is dead on. Though nobody plays a bitch better than (drumroll) Christina Ricci!!
Filia Du Coupt: Mira Suvani, the most flexible actress around. She can instantaneously ping pong from a sweetheart (American Pie) to a total dragon ^-^ (American Beauty), perfect for Filia's high strung nature.
Rezo the Red Priest: (Shoot me for this) Tom Cruise, who is both good looking and sleazy (Thanks for nothing for ruining John Woo's MI2) at the same time.
Demon Dragon Gaav: Steven Segal has the height, width and menacing presence required of the Demon Dragon King.
Hellmaster Phibrinizo: Haley Joel Osment. Cute, intelligent and creepy at the same time (Remeber, he sees dead people!)
Valgarv: Brad Pitt. Goodlooking Badass. Enough Said.
The Script Supervisor: Only James L Brooks (Simpsons, As Good As It Gets) can capture the wit, humour, drama and touching humanity of the original story in an English form.
Fight Choreography: Yuen Woo Ping (the Matrix, Once Upon A Time In China, Fist Of Legend) comes to mind, but the fights in Slayers are more physically restrained (to a certain extent)and has a LOT of firepower and superleaps. Hence Corey Yuen (Romeo Must Die, Lethal Weapon 4, High Risk, X-Men) would be better suited to the job.
Finally:
Location: Either the lush forrests and grand plains of New South Wales in Australia, or the majestic oaks of Oakland (in California) would be perfect for capturing the epic medieval beauty of the Slayers World.
Should the above requirements be met
(I know, not bloody likely. But I can dream, can't I)
A perfect Slayers live action series would be in the making
