Is anyone else confused?

Okay. Today I just saw the first episode of Tenchi Universe on the Cartoon Network. They played 13 episodes of Tenchi Muyo before that. Tenchi Universe doesn't make any sense. Now, what's the deal there, and (this is embarassing) what's an OAV?

Awright, I'll try 'ta keep this as brief as I can..*.* (yea, right..)
On CN, Tenchi Muyo! is being aired in the order that the series was originally released, and since the OAV came out before everything else (Anime-wise) it was the first thing aired, since that's what got most fans (including myself) introduced to the series. (OAV--also OVA-- is an Original Video Animation/Original Animation Video, and they were released directly to video instead of being on TV. They also _tend_ to have MUCH better quality animation, and more variant lengths. *not to mention more mature content..~ahem~*)
The Tenchi Universe series being shown now is the first TV series. ^_^
I hope that helps clear some things up.

Yes, and the TV serise all have very little to do with the OAV.

Thus, it is best to think of the TV stuff as just being a different universe, while the characters try to remain the sameish.

Ok now ill be more confused, I saw in a comercial in cartoon network, they are gonna change it to Tenchi in Tokyo, It will probably start all over again like with universe.

Yes, Tenchi in Tokyo is going to be aired, and you're right, it starts off seeming like they're all in the same type of relation as in Universe, but through the series it shows how they got to know eachother in a different way. ^^

Does that mean that theyll show the movies too? Since Tenchi Universe is ending... Therye going to show Shin Tenchi or Tenchi in Tokoyo. I heard that CN is gonna show all 3 movies too... is that right???

Yeah, Tenchi is very confusing when you first start to watch it (There are 3 different versions of how everything started) I just finished watching the first DVD of Tenchi Universe, I like it a bit more than the OVA Ryoko makes more sense as a pirate. In response to your question the OVAs have been rewritten to facilitate a TV release. OVAs or OAVs are designed to be held separately from the other works, usually they know from the Outset how many there will be and almost always DO NOT tie in with the series (Slayers is a good example) They are set up as individual stories.

Wish Cartoon network over here would show some decent Anime then i'd get some cable TV.
